Time to leave it on the line: Final Tuesday/Wednesday games preview

MIES (Switzerland) - One game remains for each team in the regular season of the Basketball Champions League and there is a lot at stake in several groups, which should make for a fun end to group play.

Here's a look at the eight games on Tuesday:

Game 1: Hereda San Pablo Burgos (4-1) vs. Rytas Vilnius (3-2) - Group H

Where: Burgos, Spain

When: 18:00

First meeting this season: Rytas defeated Burgos 87-69 on October 19

 

  • Burgos' only defeat in their last 10 regular season games in the BCL came against Rytas Vilnius, on gameday 2 this season (69-87), which was also their heaviest defeat at that stage in the competition.
  • Burgos have only lost one of their 16 home games in the BCL (78-82 vs. Pau-Lacq-Orthez in November 2019), winning the most recent 13; only Monaco had a better home win percentage than Burgos among the teams that played more than three home games.
  • Rytas have lost their last four away games in the competition after winning the first one; four of their five away games in the competition ended with a single-digit margin.
  • Burgos are averaging 12.6 3-pointers made per game in the BCL this season, more than any other team, however only Unicaja (3.8) have conceded fewer 3-pointers made per game than Rytas (6.0).
  • Gytis Radzevicius (Rytas) is one of the two players to have grabbed 10+ rebounds in three games this season in the BCL, alongside Aaron Jones, including in each of his last two games; he is the only Rytas player to have scored 10+ points in each of their five games this season.

Game 2: Besiktas Icrypex (2-3) vs. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (1-4) - Group H

Where: Istanbul, Turkey

First meeting this season: Besiktas defeated Oldenburg 83-81 on October 19

 

  • Besiktas have lost their last home game (75-82 vs. Burgos) but have lost consecutive home games in the BCL regular season only once before, it was in October-November 2018 (L2).

  • Oldenburg have lost their last four BCL games, their longest losing run in the competition; they have lost their last two away games but have never lost more in succession on the road, however.

  • Oldenburg have scored 23.6 2-pointer per game this season in the BCL, more than any other team, but Besiktas are tied for second with 23.4 2-pointers made per game; however, Oldenburg have scored 4.4 3-pointers per game, fewer than any other team.

  • Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has been Besiktas’ best scorer in three of their five games this season in the BCL, including in their last game against Oldenburg (21); however, he has made only 10% of his 3-pointers (1/10) and none of his last seven attempted.

  • Phil Pressey (Oldenburg) is one of the three players to have made 4+ steals in multiple games this season in the BCL (2, also Dogus Özdemiroglu & Arnas Butkevicius), each in his last two games; only one player in the BCL history has made 4+ steals in three consecutive games (Darius Thompson in December 2019).

Game 3: Lavrio Megabolt (2-3) vs. Unicaja (4-1) - Group C

Where: Lavrion, Greece

First meeting this season: Unicaja defeated Lavrio 86-70 on October 20

 

  • Lavrio have won their two home games and lost their three away games this season in the BCL; in fact, their two home games ended with single digit margins while their three away games ended with margins of 10 or more points.

  • Unicaja are the only team to have seen all their games ending with a double margin this season in the BCL (W4 L1); each of their four wins had seen final margins greater than 15 points.

  • Lavrio are averaging 17.4 fouls per game in the BCL this season, fewer than any other team while Unicaja are one of the four other teams to average fewer than 18 fouls per game (17.8); Lavrio (9.6) and Unicaja (9.6) are also two of the four teams to have conceded fewer than 10 free-throws made per game.

  • Dimitrios Kaklamanakis (Lavrio) is one of the two players, alongside Ismael Bako, to have grabbed more than 10 rebounds in multiple BCL games this season.

  • Unicaja’s Dario Brizuela has scored 61 points this season in the BCL, more than any other player who is averaging fewer than 20 minutes per game.

Game 4: Nizhny Novgorod (1-4) vs. JDA Dijon (3-2) - Group C

Where: Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

When: 20:30

First meeting this season: Dijon defeated Nizhny Novgorod 89-75 on October 19

 

  • Nizhny Novgorod have only won one of their four encounters against Dijon in the BCL, however it was the only one they played at home, 88-79 in March 2020.

  • Nizhny Novgorod have only won one of their last eight games in the BCL, after winning eight of the previous nine; their last win in the BCL came in their most recent home game however (74-62 vs. Lavrio).

  • Dijon have lost their last two away games in the BCL but have lost more in succession only once before, it was during their first three games on the road in the competition, in October-November 2018.

  • Only Oldenburg (23.6) have scored more 2-pointers on average per game than Dijon this season in the BCL (23.4); they have also conceded fewer 2-pointers per game than any other team (15.2).

  • Rashard Kelly (Dijon) is one of the five players to have combined 20+ points and 10+ rebounds in a BCL game this season, it was in the last game against Nizhny Novgorod (20 pts, 11 reb).

Game 5: Kalev/Cramo (1-4) vs. Tofas Bursa (4-1) - Group F

Where: Tallinn, Estonia

When: 20:00

First meeting this season: Kalev/Cramo defeated Bursa 81-77 on October 12

  • Kalev/Cramo’s only win in the BCL came against Tofas (81-77); they have conceded more than 85 points in their last three BCL games after conceding fewer than 80 points in each of their first two.
  • Tofas have won their last three games in the BCL and will aim to win four in a row for the first time in the competition; they have won 75% of their away games in the BCL (6/8) while winning only 44% of their home games (4/9).
  • Kalev/Cramo are averaging 3.2 fast break points per game and 24.8 points in the paint per game, fewer than any other team this season; they are also one of the two teams to average fewer than 10 points from turnover per game (9.8, also Igokea 8.0).
  • Silas Melson (Kalev/Cramo) has averaged 12.5 points per game in his last two appearances in the BCL after averaging 21 points per game in his first three; he scored 24 points against Tofas in the last game, his best in a game in the competition.
  • Tofas’s Pako Cruz has scored 90 points in the BCL this season, the most among the players who average fewer than 30 minutes per game; he has scored more than 20 points in two games this season, already as many as in entire previous season in the competition, in 2018-19 (2 in 13 games).

Game 6: Banco di Sardegna Sassari (1-4) vs. Lenovo Tenerife (3-2) - Group A

Where: Sassari, Italy

When: 20:00

First meeting this season: Tenerife defeated Sassari 87-60 on October 13

 

  • Sassari and Tenerife have faced each other three times previously in the BCL, each team winning their home games; each of those games ended with a 20+ points margin.
  • Sassari have only won two of their last 11 games in the BCL, but both those wins came at home, including in their most recent games at home, against Ludwigsburg (82-75).
  • Tenerife have lost four of their last six away games in the BCL regular season after losing only one of the previous 19. Tenerife are scoring on average 78.4 points per game this season, the first time they have averaged fewer than 80 points per game in a regular season.
  • Tenerife scored 56 points from the paint in the last game against Sassari, the most for a team in a BCL game this season; Sassari have conceded 44.8 points per game from the paint this season, more than any other team.
  • Fran Guerra (Tenerife) has scored more than 15 points in only two of his 33 BCL games, but were both against Sassari, including 17 in the last game this season, his best in a BCL game.

 

Game 7: MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (4-1) vs. Prometey (2-3) - Group A

Where: Ludwigsburg, Germany

When: 20:00

First meeting this season: Ludwigsburg defeated Prometey 86-64 on October 13

 

  • Ludwigsburg have won four of their five BCL games this season, one more than in their entire previous BCL season (W3 L11 in 2018-19); they have won their last two home games in the competition after winning only one of the previous nine.
  • Prometey have won their two BCL games where they scored 80+ points but have lost the three games where they failed to reach that point total.
  • Ludwigsburg have scored 86.8 points per game this season in the BCL, more than any other team, and have the best average of points scored per possession (1.21); they have also scored the most second chance points per game (20.2).
  • Justin Simon (Ludwigsburg) is the only player to have combined 10+ points and 3+ blocks in multiple games this season (2); he was the best scorer for Ludwigsburg in their previous games against Prometey, scoring 18 points while coming from the bench.
  • D.J. Kennedy (Prometey) has made nine double-doubles in the BCL, more than any other player; he scored 18 points in the last game against Ludwigsburg, his best in a BCL game this season.

Game 8: SIG Strasbourg (3-2) vs. Filou Oostende (2-3) - Group F

Where: Strasbourg, France

First meeting this season: Strasbourg defeated Oostende 83-77 on October 11

 

  • Strasbourg and Oostende already faced each other seven times in the BCL, the most played fixture in the competition; Strasbourg won six of the previous seven games against Oostende, but the only defeat came at home, in November 2018 (61-64).

  • Strasbourg have won five of their last seven home games in the BCL after losing each of the previous six; each of their last two home games in the BCL have been decided by a margin of only two points.

  • Oostende have only won one of their last seven away games in the BCL, but it was the most recent one, against Kalev/Cramo (87-85); the last time they won consecutive away games was in December 2019- February 2020 (W3).

  • John Roberson (Strasbourg) is the only player to have combined 20+ points and more than 5 assists in multiple games this season in the BCL (2), including in the last game against Oostende (20pts, 6ast).

  • Keye van der Vuurst de Vries is the player born in the 21st century to have scored the most points (176) and delivered the most assists (104) in the BCL; his teammate Amar Sylla has grabbed 113 rebounds, at least twice more than any other player born in this century.

Here's a look at the six games on Wednesday:

Game 1: Hapoel U-NET Holon (3-2) vs. Happy Casa Brindisi (1-4) - Group G

Where: Holon, Israel

When: 19:00

First meeting this season: Holon defeated Brindisi 88-61 on October 6

  • Holon have won all their three previous encounters with Brindisi in the BCL, scoring an average of 85.3 points per game in those matchups; two of those three games ended with a differential of two points.
  • Holon have won their two home games in the BCL this season, but only once before have they won more consecutive games at home in the competition: it was in between October and November 2018 when they won four in a row.
  • Brindisi have lost 12 of their 15 away games in the BCL (W3), including their last four; Brindisi have conceded an average of 90.6 points per game, the most among all teams with more than 10 road games in the BCL.
  • Steve Zack combined for a double-double in his debut with Holon in the BCL against Darüssafaka (12 pts & 11 reb) after averaging 5.0 points and 5.3 rebounds in his three previous appearances with Burgos in the competition.
  • Nick Perkins has been averaging 19.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in his last four BCL appearances with Brindisi, after recording four points and four rebounds against Holon in the first game of the season.

Game 2: Darussafaka (2-3) vs. U-BT Cluj Napoca (4-1) - Group G

Where: Istanbul, Turkey

First meeting this season: Cluj Napoca defeated Darussafaka 66-60 on October 5

 

  • Darüssafaka have won just three of their 11 games in the BCL, but all those wins have come at home, including the two they played at home this season; seven of their last eight games have ended with a single digit point differential.

  • Cluj Napoca have won four of their five games in the BCL, although they lone defeat happened on a road game (68-78 at Holon); the Romanian club have scored 105 on average in their last two BCL games after scoring 70 per match in their first three.

  • Darüssafaka have made the most steals per game in the BCL this season (10.4); however, they have also made the most turnovers per game of any team in the league this term (18.4).

  • Cluj Napoca have scored (18.6) and attempted (27.4) the most free-throws per game in the BCL in 2021-22; they have also drawn the most fouls per game of any team in the league this season (26.6).

  • Brandon Brown has combined for 18.5 points and 9.0 assists in his last two BCL games with Cluj Napoca; he has scored 50% of his attempted 3-pointers (6/12) and 93% of his shots from the FT line (13/14) in those two appearances.

Game 3: ERA Nymburk (2-3) vs. Galatasaray Nef (4-1) - Group E

Where: Prague, Czech Republic

When: 18:30

First meeting this season: Galatasaray defeated Nymburk 101-85 on October 6

 

  • Nymburk have lost their last two BCL games but haven’t had a longer stretch of defeats since November – December 2018 when they lost three in a row; they have scored an average of 70 points in their last two games, after scoring 85.2 per game since the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

  • Galatasaray have won their last two BCL games but have never won more in a row in the competition; they have won just one of their five away games in the BCL (L5), conceding more than 80 points in each.

  • Galatasaray starting lineup have scored 79% of their team total points, the most among all teams in the BCL this season; however, their bench unit have scored 25.5 points per game in their last two matches, after scoring just 13 per contest in the previous three games.

  • Galatasaray have scored 23.4 points per game in the first quarter, the highest for any team in the BCL in 2021-22; the Turkish side have scored the most points on average in the first half this season (44.4), but Nymburk boasts the second most points scored before half-time (43.6).

  • Nymburk’s Vojtech Hruban has scored a total of 975 points in the BCL and is 25 points away from becoming the first player ever with 1000 points in the competition.

Game 4: Falco Szombathely (4-1) vs. VEF Riga (2-3) - Group D

Where: Szombathely, Hungary

When: 20:00

First meeting this season: Szombathely defeated Riga 80-74 on October 20

 

  • Szombathely have won their last two BCL games, but only once before have they won more in a row (W3 in December 2019); eight of their last nine home games have ended with a single digit differential.

  • Riga have lost all their six away games in the BCL in the current calendar year, although five of those games ended with a single digit differential.

  • Szombathely have scored 40.8 points per game in the paint, the most in the BCL this season; however, they have scored just 30 points in the paint against Riga, the fewest for them in 2021-22.

  • Zoltan Perl (Szombathely) has scored 18+ points in three different BCL games this season but has never had such more games in a single league campaign before; Perl has scored 223 points off the bench, the fourth most of any player since his debut in the BCL at the start of the 2019-20 season.

  • Jalen Riley has scored 17+ points in three of his five games with Riga in the BCL but is yet to score in double-digits in consecutive games: he scored only two points in the last game, the fewest for him.

Game 5: Nutribullet Treviso (3-2) vs. AEK (1-4) - Group D

Where: Treviso, Italy

When: 20:00

First meeting this season: Treviso defeated AEK 92-77 on October 19

 

  • Treviso have lost their last two games in the BCL, after winning the first three; Treviso have won their two home fixtures in the competition.

  • AEK will not advance from the regular season phase for the first time in their six seasons in the BCL; they have lost their last five away games in the competition, the longest losing streak on the road for them.

  • AEK have allowed their opponents to record 22.8 assists per game, the most in the league in 2021-22; Treviso dished out 24 assists against AEK, a joint-high for them in a single game in the BCL.

  • Henry Sims has blocked 2+ shots in each of his five games in the BCL, while no other player has had more than three games with two or more blocks in the league this season; he had four blocks in the last game, tied for the most in the BCL in 2021-22.

  • AEK’s Braian Angola scored 22 points in his most recent BCL game but has never scored more than 15 points in consecutive games; he hasn’t scored 10+ points in any of his two previous encounters with Italian teams.

Game 6: Arged BM Stal Ostrow Wielkopolski (1-4) vs. Pinar Karsiyaka (2-3) - Group B

Where: Ostrow Wielkopolski, Poland

First meeting this season: Karsiyaka defeated Ostrow 80-77 on October 13

 

  • Ostrów Wielkopolski have lost four of their five games in the BCL, but their only win came at home (76- 65 vs. Jerusalem); the Polish team have lost all four games in which they have conceded 80+ points and won the only game in which they have conceded fewer than that.

  • Karsiyaka have lost their last three BCL games, their longest losing streak in the competition; they have scored fewer than 70 points in each of their last three games, also their longest run in the league.

  • Ostrów Wielkopolski have had 76.6 possessions per game, the highest of any team in the BCL this season; however, they are one of only four teams to have scored fewer than one point per possession in 2021-22 (0.99).

  • Karsiyaka's bench unit have allowed their opponents’ bench player to score on average 35.8 points per game in the BCL this season, more than any other team.

  • James Palmer Jr. (Ostrów Wielkopolski) has scored all his 20 attempted free-throws, the most by any player yet to miss a FT in the BCL in 2021-22; Palmer Jr. has scored more than 10 points in each of his five games this season, including 21 against Karsiyaka, the most for him in a single BCL game.
