Amazing Chris Dowe defeats Unicaja with a four-point play

ZAPORIZHIA (Ukraine) - Prometey took down Unicaja 70-69 despite being down by three points without possession in the last 30 seconds. The champions of Ukraine found a hero in the man with the number zero, 30-year-old Chris Dowe, who hit the game winning shot with eight seconds left.

It's not the first time Dowe has done it in Ukraine this season. Just two weeks ago, his last second triple forced the decisive Game 3 in the Play-In series against Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem, allowing Prometey to reach the Round of 16 in the first place.

Turning point: It seemed Unicaja will pull out a win when they went on a 14-1 run in the fourth quarter, erasing what was a 10-point deficit. When Dario Brizuela banked in a runner to beat the shot clock buzzer, and Dejan Kravic backed it up with a block on Miro Bilan at the other end, it seemed it was a done deal.

But at +3 with less than 30 seconds left, Matt Mooney turned the ball over, running into Bilan who forced a jump ball. Possession arrow favored Prometey, coach Ronen Ginzburg wasted no time in giving the ball to Dowe.

Dowe beat his man off the dribble, and Carlos Suarez hit him on the wrist as he shot the three-pointer for the tie. It went in, with Dowe completing the four-point play from the line to give Prometey a 70-69 lead.

Suarez got a chance for redemption in the last eight seconds, but his three-pointer did not hit the target as time expired.

Game heroes: Dowe finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, getting a number of heroic shots to fall in the final quarter.

But it wouldn't have mattered if Prometey didn't also have D'Angelo Harrison to do his thing, getting 19 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, all four of those being way behind the line.

Stats don't lie: While Unicaja's 15 turnovers don't seem like a large number, it allowed Prometey to create an 18-6 advantage in points from turnovers, and was a big reason why Prometey were 13-0 in fast break points.

Bottom line: Unicaja dominated the Regular Season, but their new playcaller Angel Sanchez-Canete now has a mountain to climb, down at 1-2 after the first three games of the Round of 16.

Another problem for the Spaniards is the fact that they have to travel to Belgium and Romania, getting only one more home game the rest of the way. Dario Brizuela was their bright spot on the day, getting 24 points.

Prometey only finished the game, but are already flying to Belgium. The champions of Ukraine are set to face the champions of Belgium Filou Oostende on Thursday.

They said:

"It's been a hard game for us, for sure. We made a huge effort to come back, we did really good things, considering the time we had to prepare for this game and the whole situation that we had. We were close enough at the end, but we missed the game in those details. We're on a good path now, we just need to keep working." - Dario Brizuela, Unicaja

"During some stretches of the game, we made a great effort to come back, fixing little mistakes, fastbreaks after turning the ball over, bad shots, all the bad things we did in the first half, little by little our players were fixing them. At the end, we were dominating in the defense and rebounding, we were patient enough to find good shoots, but talent and little details by our players who didn't foul before the shot... and that's it. You make even a little mistake against a talented team, and you can lose by one, like this." - Unicaja head coach Angel Sanchez-Canete

"A win's a win. Above everything else, I'm just happy we're 1-0. Played a great team tonight, I'm just happy to start 1-0. I felt like they beat us to a lot of loose balls, which led to points for them in crucial moments of the game. We had the lead, felt like every time we could've expanded it they got a 50-50 ball, scored and made us pay for it." - Chris Dowe, Prometey

"For us as a young club to beat Malaga, a club with history of EuroLeague and Spanish League, it's another achievement that we did this season, and it's amazing. I told the players in the locker room that we should've won this game by 15 points, we had so many options to kill the game, and we didn't use them. We missed a lot of the shots under the basket and open shots. In the end, we had our luck today and in the last game against Jerusalem, Chris took really big shots. If we lost this game, it would've been a pity because we played better." Prometey head coach Ronen Ginzburg
