Lenovo Tenerife remain unbeaten in Round of 16, get closer to spot in Quarter-Finals

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA (Spain) - After only being +1 at halftime, Lenovo Tenerife went +24 in the second half on the way to an 87-62 win over Falco Szombathely, inching closer to their spot in the Quarter-Finals.

This was Tenerife's 100th game in the Basketball Champions League, becoming the first team to reach that milestone.

They have also now won 75 games in the competition, while no other team have won more than 60 games. By winning 75 percent of their games, they have the highest winning percentage amongst all teams with more than 40 games in the competition.

Turning point: It was a closely contested first half with both teams being separated by only as many as five points, as Tenerife led 40-39 heading into the second half. Tenerife took command in the third quarter and outscored Szombathely 26-13, stretching their lead to as many as 16 points, putting the game out of reach for Szombathely.

Game hero: Kyle Wiltjer finished with a game-high 23 points along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point.

Wiltjer has scored 20+ points in each of his last two games in the BCL after reaching that mark only once in his previous 11 games in the competition.

Stats don't lie: The game was won behind the arc, as Tenerife made 14 more threes and shot a blistering 16-of-29 as a team, while Szombathely only shot 2-of-15. Four players for Tenerife made at least two threes (Wiltjer, 6; Sasu Salin, 3; Aaron Doornekamp, 3; Bruno Fitipaldo, 2) and those four players combined to make 14 of the team's 16 total threes.

Tenerife had 28 assists on 30 total made field goals.

Marcelinho Huertas dished out 9 assists tonight and he is now the third player to reach 300+ assists in BCL history. The Brazilian point guard now has a total of 302 assists and needs five more to surpass Tamir Blatt (306) as the second player with the most assists in the league.

With Szombathely struggling from three-point range, they scored 44 of their 62 total points from in the paint.

Bottom line: Tenerife are now 4-0 and the Spanish club will travel to face Rytas Vilnius (2-2) in their next game on Tuesday March 15.

Szombathely are now 0-4 and are all but eliminated from contention. The Hungarian club will travel to face SIG Strasbourg (2-2) in their next game on Monday March 14.

They said: "First of all, I want to congratulate Tenerife on this deserved win," said Boris Barac. "We played okay first half. We were there, but in the third quarter, they scored some transition threes which at the end, decided the game."

"In my opinion, they [Tenerife] are the best team in the group and they deserve to win, and I wish them good luck not just in this group, but forward in the Champions League," said Szombathely head coach Milos Konakov. "In the first 20 minutes, we were really precise and followed our plan, especially defensively because we know this type of team, if you made easy mistake and they punish, they can be a problem for you."

"I'm proud of our team because we came out in the second half really strong, and we killed it in the second half," said Wiltjer. "So, we're just glad to get the win and be the group leader. That was our goal coming in to this second round. ... Before the game, I usually have pregame pancakes every morning and I forgot to have pancakes this morning and my wife actually woke me up and made me have my pregame pancakes. I feel like we got this win because of the pregame pancakes."

"It was a tough game during the first 20 minutes," said Tenerife head coach Txus Vidorretta. "We needed to change many things in the second half especially our aggressiveness and our condition in the paint. Doing this and with a great percentage from three-point line, finally we made a very good result."
