Holston wins battle of elite point guards, Dijon force 24 Holon turnovers

DIJON (France) - David Holston and Joe Ragland went head to head in this one and delivered impressive numbers. Holston's JDA Dijon took better care of the ball, good enough for a 78-66 win over Hapoel U-NET Holon, their first in the Round of 16.

Dijon paid the price of a tough schedule in their Gameday 1 defeat to MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, but looked fresh and strong this time around to go to 1-1. Hapoel U-NET Holon played their first game, falling to 0-1.

Turning point: It was a close, low scoring game until late in the third quarter. An off-balance three-pointer by 21-year-old Robin Ducote proved to be the final gust of wind in JDA Dijon's sails, opening up a 7-point gap at the third quarter buzzer.

In a game where Holon struggled offensively so much, those seven points felt like +17. Dijon did not let their guard down, not even once the rest of the way, creating a 12-point win from what was a back-and-forth battle throughout the first 30 minutes.

Game hero: Joe Ragland came into the game as the leading man in assists per game in the BCL, and he was right on his season average, dishing out 7 assists, with 13 points and 6 rebounds. But, Ragland struggled against David Holston and Dijon's pressure defense, committing 6 turnovers, too, allowing Holston to take a win in their matchup on Tuesday night.

Dijon's leader had 15 points, 9 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds to send a message that he's still the point guard to beat in this League. Honorable mention goes to Rashard Kelly, he's had his third 20+ point, 10+ rebound game of the season with exactly 20 and 10 on the night.

Stats don't lie: Committing 24 turnovers is not going to get the job done anywhere, and especially not on the road in Dijon. Holon's disastrous control of offense allowed Dijon to own a 24-7 edge in points from turnovers, more than enough to pick up a win.

In fact, Holon had more turnovers (24) than field goals (23) in this one.

Bottom line: We have seen only two games so far, but it seems winning on the road is going to be extremely tough in this group. Ludwigsburg and Dijon showed what kind of pressure they can put up on their home courts, Holon and Galatasaray are yet to play in front of their fans, but it doesn't seem like it should be any different.

They said:

"Very happy with this win against a great team. We had a good reaction after that first defeat in Germany." - Robin Ducote, JDA Dijon

"Holon is a very experienced team, with an experienced coach (Guy Goodes). They have a good roster, we didn't start the game well, didn't have enough concentration, and because of this we had stress and weren't running back on defense. They scored 9 easy transition points in the first half. The main point in the second half was not to give them easy points in transition, and we received zero, and to be more tough defensively. In the end, it was an important win. You're not allowed to lose games at home if you want to have any kind of chance to get into the fight for top eight." - JDA Dijon head coach Nenad Markovic

"I want to congratulate JDA Dijon on the way they played tonight. Very aggressive on the ball in pick and roll, they forced us to 24 turnovers, that was the game. It was crucial for us, they had a lot of layups and easy points because of that. In these kind of games you have to be superfocused, adjusting quickly to the opponent and style, but we couldn't do that. Also, we only shot 11 three-pointers today, it's not normal for our team, because we usually shoot 27 to 30 shots. I don't know why we didn't get those shots." - Hapoel U-NET Holon head coach Guy Goodes

"We just didn't play our best basketball. A lot of turnovers, didn't shoot the ball well, they had a lot of easy points and fast breaks and it's tough to beat a team like that on the road. Credit to Dijon, they came from two tough losses and played a great game. We have to do the same. Got to get back to playing our style of basketball." - Adam Smith, Hapoel U-NET Holon
