The Point God: Marcelinho Huertas saves the day for Tenerife

MIES (Switzerland) - Lenovo Tenerife as the perennial contender. Prometey as the new kids on the block. Game on the line, massive two points at stake, who comes up as the game hero? The 38-year-old who shot 4-of-25 from three-point range in the entire 2021-22 season up until that point.

Marcelinho Huertas was also 0-of-4 from deep in the game against Prometey, but once the Ukrainian champs opened up a seven point lead with four minutes to play, there was no doubt in his mind about whether to take the shots or not.

Bruno Fitipaldo cut the gap to five points from the line, and then it was all about Marcelinho's reads. First up, push the tempo after a defensive stop, punish the horrible defensive transition by Prometey which left Viacheslav Petrov on Huertas. Petrov tried retreating to the paint, no hesitation from Marcelinho - 73-75.

Seeing one go through the net was all he needed. Next up, Kyle Wiltjer steals the ball, Fitipaldo leads the fast break, and Huertas sprints right next to him, but not towards the rim. The Brazilian point guard stopped at the three-point line, and knocked down the triple to take the lead, 76-75, raising the atmosphere in San Cristobal de La Laguna.

With Huertas hitting back-to-back triples, Prometey's defensive schemes went out of the window in the closing minutes. Realizing he was a threat on the ball made them forget about Giorgi Shermadini under the rim twice in the last two minutes, and Huertas was ready to dish out two clutch assists.

Prometey did get a chance to force overtime as time expired, but D'Angelo Harrison's collision with Bruno Fitipaldo wasn't an illegal one. No call, time ran out, Tenerife escaped with an 80-78 win.

"The result is disappointing, because it's the second time we lose by two or three points to Tenerife," Prometey head coach Ronen Ginzburg said.

You have to feel for Prometey. They lost the first encounter to Tenerife when Aaron Doornekamp knocked down a triple in the last second, they lost the second one to ice cold Huertas.

Ice cold, as in his shooting this season. The 38-year-old was 1-of-4 from three-point distance in the BCL heading into this game, then missed his first four attempts against Prometey, and over nine games of the Liga Endesa in Spain, he only knocked down 3-of-17.

Oh, and one of those three was a lefty wrist flip, off the dribble...

But who cares about the percentages when he was the game-winner.

"The most important thing we did is fight until the end. We had Marce at the end of the game to hit those very important shots, and make good plays offensively and defensively. We're happy, it's an important win with just six games in the first round," Fitipaldo praised his backcourt partner.

Fitipaldo led the scoring with 18 points, Huertas had 12, and Shermadini made his BCL season debut with 14 points in 17 minutes, going 6-of-8 from the field. Petrov's 19 points weren't enough for the newcomers from Ukraine.

Tenerife could've easily been down at 1-3, but clutch performances by their leaders gave them two close wins to put them at 3-1, tied for first place with MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in Group A.

Prometey dropped to 1-3, it seems that their game against Banco di Sardegna Sassari will be do-or-die.

Sweep completed, Tofas rise above SIG

In Group F, Tofas Bursa completed the sweep over SIG Strasbourg, putting themselves into pole position to win the group and advance straight into the Round of 16.

A wire-to-wire 85-75 win gave their fans plenty to be happy about, as Hakan Demir's squad never trailed in this one, creating a 12-point advantage already in the first quarter.

Tomislav Zubcic started strong and scored 10 of his 14 points in the first seven minutes. Pako Cruz took over with three triples in the first half, and finished with four three-pointers for 12 points, and it was all about Berk Ugurlu and Jeremy Simmons after the break.

Ugurlu had 10 points and 7 assists, Simmons did not miss from the field en route to a team-high 15 points, sending Tofas to 3-1.

Strasbourg looked like they had a comeback in them, they tied the game late in the third thanks to Tony Crocker (22pts, 6-of-9 3PTS), but ran out of gas in the fourth.

The 15 turnovers they had aren't exactly horrible, but Tofas made them pay, creating a 29-16 advantage in points from turnovers. Strasbourg drop to 2-2, tied with Belgian champs Filou Oostende.

That's because Oostende had no mercy for Kalev/Cramo, and decided not to wait for overtime to throw their best punch. Dario Gjergja's men blew out the Estonian champs 99-66, leading by 39 at one point.

Levi Randolph was the top scorer with 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and Oostende were a +40 team with him on the floor. Rauno Nurger was the only Kalev/Cramo player in double figures with 14.

BAXI Manresa through to Round of 16

In Group B, Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem came from -12 to win by seven points, taking down Arged BM Stal Ostrow Wielkopolski 83-76. It was their first win of the season, but they remain bottom of the group, as Polish champs won the first matchup by 11.

Retin Obasohan exploded for 20 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, Jalen Adams added 13 points to the mix in a win which was celebrated in - Spain.

That's because 1-3 Jerusalem and 1-3 Ostrow can no longer catch the group leading 4-0 BAXI Manresa. Also, since Manresa swept the 2-2 Pinar Karsiyaka squad, it means that the Spaniards will finish top of the group no matter what happens the rest of the way.

Manresa are through to the Round of 16, the remaining three teams will fight for two tickets to the Play-In series. Second-placed teams from all groups will have the home-court advantage in the best-of-three duels with the third-placed teams. Winners of those matchups will reach the four groups of four teams in the Round of 16.
