Week 5 Tuesday/Wednesday games preview

MIES (Switzerland) - Week five of the Basketball Champions League is quickly approaching with another seven-game slate between Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 that features two matchups between unbeaten teams.

Here's a look at the three games on Tuesday:

Game 1: Besiktas Icrypex (1-1) vs. Rytas Vilnius (1-1) - Group H

Where: Istanbul, Turkey

Rytas 87-69 win over Hereda San Pablo Burgos

 

  • Besiktas have won their last four home games in the BCL regular season, scoring on average 87.5 points per game in that span; they have won each of their previous two home games played against a Lithuanian team, both against Neptunas Klaipeda.
  • Jordan Bone scored 18+ points and has dished exactly five assists in each of his two BCL appearances with Besiktas – he will try to become the first player this season combining for 15+ points and 5+ assists in three different BCL games.
  • Rytas have lost their last three away games in the BCL after winning their first one; after their win at home against Hereda San Pablo Burgos during gameday 2 (87-69) – their biggest win in the competition - they will attempt to win consecutive BCL games for the first time.
  • Rytas have scored 22 points per game after turnovers - no team has a better average in the BCL in 2021-22; however, they have conceded 20.5 points per game in fast break situation, the most of any team in the league this season.
  • Ivan Buva has scored 19+ points in his last two BCL games with Rytas but has never scored that many points in 3+ consecutive games in the competition (27 appearances); Buva is going to play against his former club Besiktas, which he represented in the BCL in 2018-19, averaging 14.6 points and 6.4
    rebounds per game.

Game 2: Lavrio Megabolt (1-1) vs. Nizhny Novgorod (0-2) - Group C

Nizhny 75-89 loss to JDA Dijon

  • Lavrio won 65-63 their first home game in the BCL and will attempt to become the third team from Greece to win their first two home games in the competition, after Aris in 2016-17 and Promitheas Patras in 2018-19.
  • Tyson Carter is the only player to have scored more than 10 points in each of Lavrio's two previous games in the BCL this season: Carter has scored 15+ points in each of his two games, while scoring, at least, two shots from behind the arc in each.
  • Nizhny have lost their last five BCL games, their longest run of defeats in the competition; they have won three of their previous four games against teams from Greece in the competition, twice against Peristeri in 2019-20 and once against AEK in the 2020-21 Playoffs.
  • Nizhny have the fewest possessions per game of any team in the BCL this season (68.7) but are also the team to have made (20.0) and attempted (25.5) the most free-throws per game among all teams in the league in 2021-22.
  • Sergey Toropov has scored exactly 15 points in each of his last two games with Nizhny in the BCL, after never scoring that many points in any of his previous 29 games in the competition.

Game 3: Hereda San Pablo Burgos (1-1) vs. EWE Baskets Oldenburg (1-1) - Group H

Oldenburg 81-83 loss to Besiktas

  • Burgos lost their last BCL game, 69-87 against Rytas, but have lost consecutive games only once before in the competition, a run of three defeats in October-November 2019; they have won each of their last 12 home games in the BCL however.
  • Burgos have conceded a joint-high 25 points per game after turnovers in the BCL 2021-22 (also Nizhny); however, Oldenburg have made the fewest steals per game amongst all teams in the league this season (3.5).
  • Vítor Benite scored six points in his last BCL game with Burgos after scoring an average of 16.5 points per game in his previous 15 appearances in the league; Benite hasn't scored in single-digits in consecutive BCL games since October – November 2019 (four games).
  • Oldenburg have won four of their last five away games in the BCL after losing four of the previous five; their only defeat in those last five away games came in Spain however, in January 2018 against UCAM Murcia (65-85).
  • Ricky Paulding has scored a total of 529 points in the BCL, the most of any Oldenburg player; only eight players have scored more points for a single club than Ricky Paulding with the German side.

Game 1: VEF Riga (0-2) vs. AEK (0-2) - Group D

AEK 77-92 loss to Nutribullet Treviso

  • Riga have lost their last eight games in the BCL but their last win came at home against a Greek team, Peristeri in January 2021 (60-57); since their debut in the BCL in 2019-20, they are the only team to have lost 20+ games in that span (23).
  • Riga bench players have scored 40.5 points per game, the highest average among all bench units in the BCL 2021-22; AEK bench unit have scored an average of 19 points per game in the league this season.
  • Kristers Zoriks is averaging 15.5 points and 5.0 assists per game in the BCL this season; he has combined for 10+ points and exactly five assists in each of his two appearances with Riga in the league in 2021-22 and had his best tally of points in his last game in the competition (21 vs. Falco Szombathely).
  • AEK have lost their first two games of a BCL season for the first time in the competition; they have lost five away games in the BCL in 2021, more than in any other calendar year before.
  • Stevan Jelovac is the only player to have scored in double-digits in AEK's two games in the BCL this season; Jelovac has scored an average of 16.0 points per game in the league in 2021-22 and has now scored in double-digits in his last seven BCL games, as many times as in his first 19 BCL games.

Game 2: Darussafaka (0-1) vs. Happy Casa Brindisi (0-2) - Group G

  • Darüssafaka and Happy Casa Brindisi faced each other in the BCL last season, with two wins for the Italian side, each team scoring 80+ points in both games.
  • Darüssafaka have lost each of their last six games in the BCL, with their only win in the competition coming in their very first game, at home against Filou Oostende in October 2020 (79-74); they have scored fewer than 70 points in each of their last two BCL games after scoring 70+ points in each of their first five.
  • Isaiah Pineiro scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in his first game with Darüssafaka in the BCL; Pineiro combined for an average of 11.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game in his first BCL season (with Riga in 2020-21).
  • Happy Casa Brindisi have lost their last four games in the BCL, their longest losing run in the competition; their last two away wins in the BCL came in Turkey however, against Darüssafaka and Tofas last season.
  • Nick Perkins scored 19 points in his most recent game with Happy Casa Brindisi in the BCL, his joint-highest tally in a BCL game; this will be Perkins seventh game against a Turkish team in the BCL – he has scored 10+ points in five of his previous six games against teams from that country.

Game 3: Hapoel U-NET Holon (1-0) vs. U-BT Cluj Napoca (2-0) - Group G

  • Holon have won their last four games in the BCL regular season, their best run at that stage of the competition; they won their first game this season (88-61 vs. Brindisi) but have never won their first two games of a BCL season.
  • Holon have allowed their opponents to score only 0.82 points per possession, the best defensive record amongst all teams in the BCL this season; they have also grabbed 93.9% of the rebounds
    available on their defensive basket, the best such ratio of any team in the league in 2021-22.
  • Steven Gray scored 20 points in his BCL debut with Holon; Gray has now scored 20+ points in four of his 28 league appearances and has never done it in consecutive games.
  • Cluj Napoca have won their two first games in the BCL and will try to become the first Romanian side to win three consecutive games in the league; Cluj Napoca's two games have been decided by a differential of six or fewer points.
  • Cluj Napoca have made 65.2% of their attempted two-pointers, the highest scoring ratio among all teams in the BCL this season; 63% of the total amount of points scored by the Romanian side have come from two-point shots, the highest such percentage of any team in the league this term.

Game 4: Nutribullet Treviso (2-0) vs. Falco Szombathely (2-0) - Group D

  • Treviso have won their first two games in the BCL and will try to become the third Italian team to win their first three games in the competition, after Avellino in 2016-17 and Virtus Bologna in 2018-19.
  • Treviso have scored 91.5 points per game, more than any other team in the BCL in 2021-22; only the Italian side has made 50% or more of its shots from the field (52.7%), 40% or more of its attempted three-pointers (40.8%) and 80% or more of its shots from the free-throw line (89.3%) in the league this season.
  • Szombathely have won their last two games in the BCL and will try to win three in a row for the second time in the competition, after doing it in December 2019; eight of their last nine games in the BCL have ended with a single-digit points differential.
  • Zoltan Perl has combined for 16+ points and 6+ assists in each of his two appearances with Szombathely in the BCL this season: he has never done it in three consecutive games in the competition
    (21 appearances).
  • Treviso (45.5) and Szombathely (45.0) are the two teams to have scored the most points per game in the second half in the BCL this season.
