BCL Fantasy tips: The man who was better than TJ Shorts last season

MIES (Switzerland) - There's nothing better than entering the final gameday (of the Regular Season, at this instance)  with all to play for. EWE Baskets Oldenburg are in such a position, meaning there can be no calculations and load management.

That's good news for all of you BCL Fantasy players who have the pleasure of leaning on DeWayne Russell on your team. He is playing his best basketball, and it's no surprise that he's joining the record books in a hurry in the Basketball Champions League.

Last week, Russell became the first player this season to put up 20+ points and 10+ assists in multiple games, and only the fourth in BCL history to have had multiple such games in a single season, after Jordan Theodore, Chris Wright and Joe Ragland.

Theodore and Wright were also on another list, as the only two players with five straight games of 15+ points and 5+ assists. Russell joined that list, climbing above 15 and 5 in all five games this season. But can he hold onto this level all season long? The answer is yes, of course.

The 29-year-old also spent last season with Oldenburg, and while we were drooling over TJ Shorts' unbelievable numbers and performances, ending up with Telekom Baskets Bonn winning the BCL title and Shorts picking up the MVP of the Season and the MVP of the Final Four award, Russell was actually even better in Germany.

Shorts did win the MVP award there, too, but Russell had more points and more assists per game than Bonn's point god.

In fact, DeWayne Russell averaged 20.3 points and 7.6 assists per game, ending up as both as the top scorer and the top passer of the easyCredit BBL last season.

No wonder he was named the Best Offensive Player of the season in Germany in 2023. An amazing achievement considering the rising amount of offensive firepower among German clubs.

He's off to 18.5 points and 6.3 assists per game this season, with just two games in single digits domestically, and no games with less than six assists in the BCL.

Russell is averaging 19.0 points to lead all scorers in the BCL, while holding third place in assists, with 8 per game. Oldenburg had a horrible start to the campaign with three straight defeats, but DeWayne got them up to 2-3 with a trip to SIG Strasbourg this week.

Oldenburg could potentially even win the group if all four teams end up at 3-3. Reaching the Round of 16 would also bolster Russell's chances of winning the MVP of the Season award here.

Until that happens, he is one of the most reliable pieces you can ask for in the BCL Fantasy game.
