Fuenlabrada scrape narrow win in Dijon thriller

DIJON (Basketball Champions League) - Montakit Fuenlabrada had to hold on for dear life but survived a furious late comeback by JDA Dijon in Group C on Wednesday night in France.

Winners of their first game at Brose Bamberg thanks to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Pako Cruz, Fuenlabrada edged Dijon 87-85 with Robert Arnold's potential game-winning 3-ball off target for the hosts at the end.

Cruz turned in another stunning effort for Fuenlabrada. The Mexico international was 8 of 9 from the floor and a perfect 3 of 3 from behind the arc. He finished with 19 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and two steals.

The visitors looked as if they might lower the boom late in the third quarter when opening up a 14-point lead yet Dijon refused to cave in. Instead, led by a battling Alexandre Chassang, who had 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Axel Julien, who finished with a team-high 18 points and had 5 assists and 4 rebounds, Dijon fought back.

Dijon coach Laurent Legname did an excellent job of keeping his team focused in difficult times

They twice closed the gap to a single point, at 84-83 after a Julien 3-ball and then at 86-85 following a Jeremy Leloup fast-break layup. After the second of those baskets, just 33 seconds remained in the game.

Fuenlabrada may have caught a break when Leloup was called for a foul on Talib Zanna for nudging him in the lane, and the Nigeria international sank 1 of 2 free-throws for a 87-85 lead.

Dijon quickly pushed the ball up the floor but instead of attacking the basket, passed it out to Robert Arnold on the wing and the veteran attempted a 3-ball but missed everything as the buzzer sounded.

Fuenlabrada, playing for the first time in the Basketball Champions League under former coach Nestor 'Che' Garcia, won for the third time while Dijon dropped to 1-2.
