The Great Eight: Hooker avoids Haltali's blocks, keeps Strasbourg perfect

MIES (Switzerland) - Five games were played in the Basketball Champions League on Wednesday evening, as Season 8 reached the halfway point of the first group stage . Only six out of the 32 teams remain unbeaten.

In line with this being the eighth season, we went through eight crucial statistical categories, to pick the great eight numbers that stood out on the day. First things first, here are the results of the day:

  • PAOK mateco (2-1) v Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem (2-1) 79-77
  • SIG Strasbourg (3-0) v Pinar Karsiyaka (2-1) 80-65
  • Filou Oostende (1-2) v EWE Baskets Oldenburg (0-3) 88-83
  • Hapoel Holon (2-0) v Rio Breogan (1-2) 84-79
  • Bertram Derthona Tortona (3-0) v Igokea m:tel (0-3) 91-84

And now, the eight great performances of the day:

Most points

Filou Oostende entered the day at 0-2, knowing they still have a rock solid chance of pushing towards the next phases of this competition, because they were yet to play at home. However, it's a double-edged sword, because they were also in trouble of falling to 0-3, with a mountain to climb against powerful squads like SIG Strasbourg, Pinar Karsiyaka and EWE Baskets Oldenburg.

When Oldenburg opened up a 13-point lead after the first quarter in Belgium, Dario Gjergja's men did not panic. Instead, they won the second quarter 36-17, taking the lead and never letting go, keeping the home crowd happy with an array of wild dunks by the 20-year-old Joppe Mennes.

Whenever Oldenburg tried to close the gap, Oostende gave the ball to Damien Jefferson, and the athletic scorer delivered. He finished with 23 points, the most on the day in the entire Basketball Champions League, hitting 9-of-16 from the field, getting the perennial Belgian champs back in the hunt for a spot in the Round of 16 or the Play-In Series.

It was a historic win for coach Gjergja, too. With his 41st BCL triumph, he's now alone in the second spot for most coaching wins in League history, trailing only Lenovo Tenerife's Txus Vidorreta.

Most rebounds

Bertram Derthona Tortona may be a new club around here, but the men in white are loaded with experience. They had no issues against Igokea m:tel, and despite a slower fourth quarter, they still finished on top without any drama in the closing seconds.

Tortona are now a 3-0 team, and their firepower came from inside on a day where four of their players - including Retin Obasohan and TaShawn Thomas - missed the game due to injuries.

Mike Daum had 16 points and 6 assists, being the complimentary piece to Leon Radosevic and his monster double-double numbers of 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Croatian center was the only man in double digits in rebounds in the BCL on Wednesday, and he had more points and rebounds in this one than in the previous two games combined (17 points, 5 rebounds).

Most assists

DeWayne Russell played his best BCL game to date, getting 21 points and 11 assists, but he could not prevent EWE Baskets Oldenburg's free fall into an 0-3 hole in Group E, trailing Oostende, Karsiyaka and Strasbourg.

Most steals

It could've been another big Speedy Smith game, this time in Thessaloniki, as Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem's point guard did a bit of everything with 9 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. However, it was Smith who took and missed the last shot for Jerusalem, a pull up three-pointer for the lead with just under ten seconds to play.

Instead of Smith getting the game-winning shot, PAOK mateco held on for a two-point win to push them to the top of the group. At 2-1, PAOK own the tiebreaker over Jerusalem, but Galatasaray and Benfica are both at 1-2 and nobody should be surprised if this group ends in a four-way tie at 3-3.

Smith gets the consolation prize of picking up the most steals on the day, alongside Rio Breogan's Sergi Garcia in a defeat to Hapoel Holon, and Tortona's Leonardo Candi in a win over Igokea m:tel, also with 4 steals.

Most blocks

Take a bow, Furkan Haltali! The Turkish giant needed less than 11 minutes to get the BCL season-high 6 blocks, incredible performance by the 20-year-old off the bench.

It was not enough for Pinar Karsiyaka, as SIG Strasbourg handed them their first BCL defeat of the season.

Best +/-

The reason SIG Strasbourg were so good was because of their starting unit. Phil Booth had 16 points, Chaundee Brown Jr scored 12, while Nysier Brooks and Quinton Hooker were both +20 for the French team against Karsiyaka.

Hooker was especially good, scoring a BCL career-high 16 points, continuing the double-digit scoring run he now has in all three games of the season, while also dishing out 8 assists and picking Karsiyaka's pockets three times.

Strasbourg are up to 3-0 now, but they have a tougher half of the schedule coming up. Over the next three games, they will have to travel to Belgium to face Oostende and to Turkiye to take on Karsiyaka again.

Highest efficiency

Oostende's Jefferson again, picking up an efficiency rating of 27.

Most three-pointers made

Mike Daum knocked down four threes for Tortona, while Stefan Momirov made four for Rio Breogan. However, the story of the threes on the day belongs to Hapoel Holon - as a team they shot it 14-of-23 from beyond the arc, with six players getting multiple shots to drop.

Holon are now 2-0, with a game in hand against the 0-2 Bursaspor. It's looking good for them again, they will feel like they could be right next to Unicaja, AEK BETSSON BC, JDA Bourgogne Dijon, SIG Strasbourg and Bertram Derthona Tortona, the only perfect teams after three games played.
