Kyle Guy sets new Final Four record as Tenerife reach another Final

BELGRADE (Serbia) - Two-time Basketball Champions League winners Lenovo Tenerife will have a shot at becoming the first team with three BCL titles, after their guard Kyle Guy set a new scoring record in the eight-year long history of the Final Four.

There was a thrilling finish to the first Semi-Final in Belgrade as coach Vassilis Spanoulis saw his Peristeri bwin team go on an 8-0 run with less than two minutes to play, to cut the gap to 2 points, but Tenerife held on for a 97-93 win to make it to their fourth BCL final.

Turning point:
Peristeri were the better team in the first half, but once Guy, Marcelinho Huertas and Giorgi Shermadini took over in the third quarter, it was the triple-headed monster that the fans in black and yellow wanted to see in Belgrade.

Guy was up to 20 points early in the third quarter, Huertas joined him in the 20s by scoring 8 of Tenerife's 10 points midway through the third, and even when Peristeri stopped the two of them, it was Shermadini hurting them inside with his size and finishing.

Guy kept going in the fourth quarter, too. When he made a triple to set the score at 90-80 with two minutes to play, it looked like it was all over.

But, fueled by a couple of thousand of their fans in the stands, Peristeri had another run in them, capped by Nemanja Dangubic's three-pointer to make it 90-88 Tenerife with less than a minute to play.

That's when all of Tenerife's experience came into play. They remained calm from the free throw line to ice the game and move to the Final.

Game hero: TJ Shorts's scoring record in a BCL Final Four game was short lived. In fact, Kyle Guy broke it in the very next game, shattering Shorts's 29-point performance from the record books.

Guy finished with 34 points, knocking down six of Tenerife's seven three-pointers, and making all ten of his attempts from the free-throw line.

Stats don't lie: There is not a lot any team can do when Tenerife are shooting 31-of-51 from the field, 7-of-16 from beyond the arc and 28-of-30 from the free throw line.

Bottom line: Tenerife won the BCL in 2017 and 2022, and are looking to break away from Hereda San Pablo Burgos as the only other team with two BCL titles. Tenerife also lost the 2019 Final, which makes this their fourth trip back to the championship game.

They had amazing games from their usual one-two punch. Marcelinho Huertas finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, Giorgi Shermadini added 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. The triple-headed monster scored 82 of Tenerife's 97 points on the day.

Peristeri put up a heroic fight, but AEK remain the only Greek team to play a BCL Final. Elijah Mitrou-Long scored 18 points with 6 assists, Joe Ragland had 14 before fouling out late in the game.
