Group I: Tofas survive scare in Strasbourg, advance to Quarter-Finals

MIES (Switzerland) - Unicaja protected their perfect record as the only unbeaten team in the Round of 16, while Tofas Bursa joined them as the other Group I team to book flights to the Quarter-Finals draw, set to take place on Thursday.

Unicaja had already secured first spot in the group even before the final week of action in this Round of 16 group, but coach Ibon Navarro did not allow his players to show a lackluster effort against Cholet Basket.

The Spaniards were in front of their French rivals for most of the game, but a third quarter burst saw Cholet tie the game at 56-all, showing signs they could upset the odds and fight for a place among the elite eight in Season 8 of the Basketball Champions League.

However, that only energized Unicaja. They responded with an exclamation point in the form of an 18-0 run to end the third and cruised to an 85-70 win, entering the Quarter-Finals with a perfect 6-0 record at home.

Coach Navarro gave all 12 of his guys at least nine minutes on the floor, only two of them seeing more than 20 minutes of action. Dylan Osetkowski got to 18 points in 17 minutes, Kameron Taylor counted to 13, Tyler Kalinoski had 12, and Tyson Carter was also in double figures with 10.

Neal Sako signed out with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Cholet Basket, who knew they were out as soon as the final buzzer sounded in Malaga, Spain.

Cholet's defeat opened up the doors for Tofas Bursa and SIG Strasbourg to battle it out for the other Quarter-Finals ticket in this group. Strasbourg needed to win by 24 points or more, and with a 14-point lead already in the first quarter, it did not seem like mission impossible.

The gap ballooned to 22 points midway through the third quarter, but chasing that big of a margin meant the hosts ran out of jet fuel in the fourth quarter.

Tofas steadied the ship, stayed calm even when Strasbourg opened up another 20-point lead with just under four minutes to play, and kept the difference below 20 to avoid any drama in the clutch.

Strasbourg won 78-65, creating a three-way tie at 2-4 behind Unicaja. But Tofas had the best points difference in the triangle, finishing ahead of the two French clubs.

Paul Lacombe had 17 points for Strasbourg, Cassius Winston and Caleb Homesley combined for 34 for coach Orhun Ene.

Tofas will be the only team from Turkiye in the Quarter-Finals draw, but as an unseeded team, they know they have to win at least one road game in the best-of-three series to reach their maiden Final Four.

Unicaja have already been there last season, finishing fourth in the season ending tournament in their arena in Malaga.
