Game of the Week: EWE Baskets v PAOK

OLDENBURG (Basketball Champions League) - If there is a near certainty heading into the Game of the Week in the Basketball Champions League, a clash in Germany between EWE Baskets and PAOK, it's that a close contest is on the cards.

That's the only way that EWE Baskets do things, to be in games that go down to the wire. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. But it's always a nail-biter.

In all of their games this season, the outcome has hung in the balance until the very end. That includes one of the most exciting finishes of the competition, their heart-stopping, Gameday 1 triumph at Ventspils.

EWE Baskets won that game, 77-76. Next up was a home clash with ASVEL that the French side won, 81-79.

On Gameday 3, EWE Baskets returned to winning ways with a 70-66 victory in Poland over Rosa Radom, but the home cooking didn't taste too good the following week when once again, EWE Baskets fell, 64-63, to Neptunas Klaipedia. Last week again saw EWE Baskets play well away and win over Muratbey Usak Sportif in Turkey, 65-60.

Will the third time at home be the charm for EWE Baskets or will an up-and-down, 2-3 PAOK side deprive them of that first win in Basketball Champions League at the EWE Arena?

PAOK have a losing record, yet that could be so different. On Gameday 1, they endured the frustration of a triple overtime defeat at Rosa Radom. If that was a disappointing result, the one they had to settle for last week was even more so.

The Greek team led for most of their Gameday 5 contest at unbeaten Neptunas but then hit a drought. A basket by Darryl Bryant gave PAOK a 60-56 advantage with 5:38 remaining but the Lithuanian team then outscored them 12-0 over the next 5:35 of the game. By the time Antonio Koniaris hit a 3-pointer with just 0:03 on the clock, the rot had already taken its toll. Neptunas won, 68-63.

There are some interesting statistics to consider heading into the Game of the Week. PAOK are the top rebounding side in the Basketball Champions League, yet they also possess the worst field goal percentage (35.6) in the entire competition.

PAOK are also among the league leaders in turnovers at 17 per game while EWE Baskets are among the best at not being careless with the ball at 11.4.

Brian Qvale leads EWE Baskets in scoring

EWE Baskets center Brian Qvale is proving to be a model of efficiency. He is leading the team in scoring at 13.6ppg and also shooting 60.8 percent from the floor. The second of statistics ranks fifth overall in the competition.
