MIES (Switzerland) - Experts analyze all BCL games each week. In order to improve the understanding of referees' decisions and to increase transparency, we publish some of those Tough Calls, along with an explanation.
TC1: Bertram Derthona Basket vs. La Laguna Tenerife - Technical foul
Yellow #19 receives the ball inside the paint and is fouled by Black #4. The referees call a foul not in the act of shooting.
Afterwards, the referee call a technical foul to the Yellow team head coach. At this moment, the same head coach requests a head coach challenge asking for the foul to be upgraded to unsportsmanlike foul.
The referees decide to administer the free throw for the technical foul, which was successful. Then, the head coach challenge is granted.
After the review, the referees stay with the initial decision, personal foul not in the act of shooting, and the game is resumed with a Yellow team throw-in from the place closest to where the foul was committed.
Article 36.3.2: The opponents shall be awarded one free throw. The game shall be resumed as follows:
The free throw shall be administered immediately. After the free throw, the throw-in shall be administered by the team which had control of the ball or was entitled to the ball when the technical foul was committed, from the place nearest to where the ball was located when the game was stopped.
The free throw shall also be administered immediately, regardless of whether the order of any other possible penalties for any other fouls has been determined or whether the administration of the penalties has been started. After the free throw for a technical foul, the game shall be resumed by the team which had control of the ball or was entitled to the ball when the technical foul was committed, from the place where the game has been interrupted for the technical foul penalty.
Outcome: Correct protocol. Any Team B player or substitute shall attempt one free throw with no line-up, after which the head coach challenge is granted.
After the IRS review, the referees decide that the initial decision for personal foul remains valid. The game shall be resumed with a Yellow team throw-in from the place nearest to where the foul occurred.
TC2: Galatasaray vs. ERA Nymburk - Personal foul, held ball
Black #31 receives the ball under the basket and tries to shoot. Centre referee calls a personal foul in the act of shooting on White #73, whilst Lead referee calls a held ball.
After a short discussion, the referees decide to call the personal foul.
Article 32.1.1: A foul is an infraction of the rules concerning illegal personal contact with an opponent and/or unsportsmanlike behavior.
Article 34.1.1: A personal foul is a player's illegal contact with an opponent.
Outcome: Correct decision by the referees. Centre referee had an open angle to see the illegal contact created by White #73, whilst the Lead referee could only see the held ball. Black #31 shall be awarded two free throws.
TC3: Galatasaray vs. ERA Nymburk - Blocked shot
Black #8 tries to dunk the ball and White #13 blocks the shot.
Article 32.1.1: A foul is an infraction of the rules concerning illegal personal contact with an opponent and/or unsportsmanlike behavior.
Article 34.1.1: A personal foul is a player's illegal contact with an opponent.
