Week 9 - Wednesday Games Preview

MIES (Switzerland) - Week nine in the Basketball Champions League finishes up on Wednesday December 14 with two important games from Group H, plus an exciting Game of the Week from Group D.

Here's a look at the two games on Wednesday:

Game 1: Rytas Vilnius (2-2) v Bnei Ofek Dist Herzliya (1-3) - Group H

Where: Vilnius, Lithuania

When: 18:30 CET

In their last game, Rytas defeated Peristeri bwin for a second time, 82-71, and Herzliya suffered their second big defeat to Lenovo Tenerife, 83-63. Rytas will secure a second-place finish or better in the group with a win over Herzliya, if Peristeri lose to Tenerife.

  • Rytas have won their last two BCL games and will try to equal their best winning streak in the competition, three wins back in November-December 2021; they have won each of their last five home games in the BCL regular season.
  • Rytas' Marcus Foster scored 24 points in the last game against Herzliya, tied for his most in a BCL game; he has registered one double-double in his 24 BCL appearances, it was in his last home game (24 points, 10 rebounds v Peristeri).
  • Herzliya have lost three of their four BCL games, however, their only win came against Rytas in the last game (90-85); it was the only game in which they managed to score more than 70 points.
  • Herzliya have conceded more three-pointers per game than any other team in the BCL this season (12.8), while allowing their opponents to boast the highest scoring ratio from behind the arc (41.5 percent); Rytas made 12 shots from three-point in the last game, the most for them in a game this season.
  • Herzliya's Maurice Kemp is the only player to have scored more than 20 points in multiple BCL games this season while coming off the bench, including 23 in the last game against Rytas; Kemp averages 11.8 points per game when playing as a starter in the BCL and 20 points per game when starting on the bench.

Game 2: Lenovo Tenerife (3-1) v Peristeri bwin (2-2) - Group H

Where: San Cristobal de La Laguna, Spain

When: 20:30 CET

In their last game, Tenerife defeated Herzliya 83-63, while Peristeri lost to Rytas 82-71. Tenerife would win the group and qualify to the Round of 16 with a win over Peristeri, if Rytas also lose to Herzliya.

  • Tenerife have won 14 of their last 15 BCL games, their sole defeat in that span coming against Peristeri in the last game however (88-81); they have lost their two games against a same opponent in a BCL regular season only twice before, against Ventspils in 2017-18 and MHP RIESEN in 2021-22.
  • Tenerife are scoring 1.24 points per possession, the highest offensive rating of any team in the BCL in 2022-23; they have made 45.5 percent of their shots from behind the arc, the highest scoring ratio this season.
  • Marcelinho Huertas has made 146 assists in the BCL in 2022 after never making 90+ in a single calendar year - only Joe Ragland has more assists than him in a calendar year in league history (158, also in 2022); Huertas has made at least eight assists in 12 of his 17 BCL games this year.
  • Peristeri have lost six of their last seven away games in the BCL, including each of the most recent three, but have never lost four away games in a row in the competition; they have scored fewer than 65 points in each of their last three away games after scoring more than that in each of the previous nine.
  • Peristeri's Sylvain Francisco is the only player to have scored 15+ points while coming from the bench in each of the first four gamedays in this BCL season; he has scored exactly 17 points in each of his last three away games in the competition.
