Group G: Sassari hand Unicaja first defeat, but still end up eliminated

MIES (Switzerland) - Dinamo BDS Sassari made sure that there are no unbeaten teams in the Regular Season by defeating Unicaja on the road. However, PAOK mateco also won away from home in Dijon, keeping Sassari in the fourth spot.

Unicaja were sure of finishing first for the last two weeks, while JDA Bourgogne Dijon secured second spot last week. Dinamo BDS Sassari and PAOK mateco finish the group stage at 2-4, but PAOK won their matchup with Sassari by 20, compared to losing the reverse fixture by four points, meaning they own the tiebreaker and finish third in the group.

First defeat for Unicaja

It looked like business as usual for Unicaja in the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena, as they 28 first quarter points and built a lead of 15 points late in the first half. But coming off of a tough game against Barcelona in the Spanish League, and having secured first spot here, it seemed they let their foot off the gas late in the game.

Dinamo BDS Sassari were ready to take advantage of it, storming to a 29-12 fourth quarter, picking up a marvelous 92-82 win in Malaga. Not a lot of teams are capable of doing that, especially not this season, but for Sassari, their best game of the BCL season came a bit too late.

Jamal Jones scored 21 points, Gerald Robinson had 17 with 7 assists, Filip Kruslin (15pts), Eimantas Bendzius (14pts), De'Shawn Stephens (13pts), and Chris Dowe (12pts) were all in double figures, but they can all focus on the Italian League from now on, because their BCL campaign came to an early end.

Ibon Navarro used 11 different players this time, with the usual balanced minutes game plan. Nobody played more than Kendrick Perry (25 minutes), nine other guys played at least 17 minutes, with Tyson Carter leading the scoring with 14 points. Jonathan Barreiro scored all 11 of his in the first quarter.

Unicaja can now enjoy their month off before starting the Round of 16 in Group K. They already know one of their opponents, setting up a huge pair of battles with Galatasaray Nef.

Copy-paste in Dijon

At the same time, JDA Bourgogne Dijon and PAOK mateco played a copy of that game in France. The hosts had a big quarter in the first half, scoring 26 in the second, they had a 16-point advantage, but coming off of a tough game against Cholet in the French League, and having secured second spot here, it seemed they let their foot off the gas late in the game.

PAOK mateco were ready to take advantage of it, storming to a 28-15 fourth quarter, picking up a marvelous 74-69 win in Dijon.

Not a lot of teams are capable of doing that, especially not this season, but for PAOK, their best game of the BCL season proved to be a life-saver instead of giving them a chance to chase second spot and home court advantage in the Play-In Series.

Jalen Riley and Jaylen Hands had 17 points each, Yannick Franke was right next to them with 16 for the black-and-white squad from Thessaloniki. Gavin Ware scored 23 points on 11-of-14 from the field, Jonathan Rousselle flirted with a double-double with 12 points and 9 assists.

JDA Bourgogne Dijon will have home court advantage in the Play-In Series, while PAOK mateco will have to steal one on the road to get to the Round of 16 group stage. Both of them are facing Group H teams in the Play-Ins, but have to wait for 24 hours to see who finishes second (and faces PAOK), and third (to meet Dijon) in that group.
