Game of the Week: ASVEL v Neptunas

VILLEURBANNE (Basketball Champions League) - It's getting down to the nitty-gritty in the Basketball Champions League Regular Season with five rounds remaining.

Some teams are fighting to get into the top four or five positions of their respective pools in search of a spot in the Play-Offs.

Others, like Gameday 10 adversaries Neptunas Klaipeda and ASVEL, are battling for group supremacy and the opportunity to bypass Play-Offs Round 1.

Lithuanians Neptunas, whose fans are still buzzing about the 10 3-pointers that Jimmy Baron made in a Gameday 8 triumph over Muratbey Usak Sportif, are first in Group C with eight victories from their nine games while ASVEL are 7-2.

Both outfits will know that a runners-up finish may be good enough to reach the last 16 as the three best-ranked second-place teams at the end of the Regular Season will advance to Play-Offs Round 2.

When Neptunas clashed with ASVEL in Klaipedia on Gameday 3 in their first meeting, the Lithuanians led from start to finish and claimed an 81-67 victory. ASVEL haven't lost in the Basketball Champions League since, reeling off six consecutive wins.

The latest of those successes was especially encouraging because France international Charles Kahudi played his first game in the competition after a long injury lay-off and scored 13 points, including 5 straight at the end of the third quarter that gave his side a 59-52 lead and put them in control for good.

Kahudi, a 30-year-old small forward, figures to become more influential as the season goes on.

Baron wasn't able to duplicate his 42-point effort from Gameday 8 last week but he continued his excellent shooting from behind the arc. The American drilled 5 of 6 attempts from deep on his way to a game-high 23 points in an 86-67 triumph at Varese.

The 30-year-old Baron should get a lot of attention by the ASVEL defense as he is burying 53.2 percent (33 of 62) from long range on the season. He was 4 of 7 from behind the 3-point line in the first encounter.
