Watch it now: Jack Kayil's joins Alperen Sengun in history books

Kayil was the star of the season for ALBA BERLIN

In front of 7,450 fans in Berlin, it was the 20-year-old carrying ALBA BERLIN to an unlikely comeback against the back-to-back champions Unicaja.

BERLIN (Germany) - Sometimes you need to escape from your comfort zone to unleash the potential you have been farmed for so many years. That's basically what Jack Kayil did in 2024.

Moving to Belgrade to sign with Mega, he knew what he was leaving and was unaware of what he could have faced down the line. He was leaving Germany, the country he had been representing at the highest levels.

A season full of ups and downs came out of the destiny's script, which involved making his presence felt in the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup and eventually returning home to Berlin. Getting back to his habits and beloved roots, once he had gained some extra experience, sounded promising.

The way he balled out in Game 2 of the Quarter-Finals in the Basketball Champions League, powered by Ameresco SUNEL, says it all.

If you didn't know him before, now you will hear the name "Jack Kayil" more often.

Despite the loss and the consequent elimination from the competition in the club's first-ever BCL season, he was the reason why ALBA made it so difficult for back-to-back champs Unicaja to come home with the win.

He finished with 25 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals.

Coming off the bench, he was still the one with the most minutes played (31:24), and the team's go-to guy with 20 attempted shots from the field; he forced overtime with a perfect 2-of-2 at the line, concluding with 10-of-13 overall from the charity stripe.

It was his highest scoring performance in the BCL, and not only that: thanks to this spectacle, he became the player with the most 20-point games before turning 21 years old in BCL history (3), surpassing Alperen Sengun, Vlatko Cancar, Nolan Traore, Ante Zizic, and Furkan Korkmaz, all with two such games.

Kayil is also only the second player aged under 21 years old to have scored 25 or more points in a non-Regular Season game in BCL history, with the first being Alperen Sengun in the 2020 Round of 16 (25pts vs. Nymburk).

Don't be surprised if he ends up being named Best Young Player of the Season in 2025-26.

We just have to wait until the BCL Final Four in Badalona (May 7-9) to figure it out.

While ALBA's season is now over, Jack Kayil's potential has been ultimately and completely unleashed. Don't say that we didn't see him coming, though.

"ALBA are very well known for their youth system, connecting young talents with the first team. Coming here a few years in the making, it just feels the same again," he previously mentioned to the BCL's website.

"Everything is so connected, and everybody's on the same page. It’s just great to be around this club."

Following Wednesday's game against Ibon Navarro's powerhouse, he has now collected 11.9 points, 4.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game in his very first European campaign with the German side.

Not bad for a 2006-born guy who had to step back to find himself again. This is only the beginning for Jack Kayil; it's written in the stars. Follow the ball: it will be in his hands when clutch time approaches.
