Stepping Strong - Sneaker Exhibition

Temporary Exhibition - September 2021 to January 2022

“Stepping strong” is a tour of more than 70 pairs of sneakers from the 1890s onward. But it is not only that, it is an opportunity to discover how the materials and technology that are applied in their manufacture have improved, or how the weight and the design have been improved to help players overcome and prevent injuries.

You will be able to discover the characteristics of each sneaker, why they have become a fashion accessory and the history of the amazing men and women who used them; Oscar Schmidt, Uljana Semjonova, Lauren Jakson, Theresa Edwards, Nikos Galis, Drazen Petrovic, Panagiotis Fasoulas, Vladimir Tachenko, Sam Perkins... and more!

In some cases, we have put the sneakers in context with interesting objects of their time so that you can see how cameras, music players or telephones were like; and you'll learn that life is always in motion, changing and evolving in all areas.

Some of the sneakers hail from the FIBA Collections given to the Foundation by players or Federations during competitions, others were donated by famous Hall of Famers, many come from the personal collection of Joachim Dahan, a Geneva native passionate about both sneakers and basketball.

You will discover a pair of Air Jordans signed by Michael Jordan himself, but you will also discover a prototype made for Kobe Bryant and the biggest pair you will likely ever see, Dikembe Mutombo’s size 59.

Many brands are represented; Converse, Nike, Li-Ning, Peak, Puma, Adidas, Reebok, Keds, Ball-Band, Jets, Kronos, Sergio Tacchini...

The exhibition is shown at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies Switerland, between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday and the entrance is free.
