Tournament 2 Quarter-Finals: Dramatic wins for Cholet, Varese, Brindisi

ANTALYA (Turkiye) - Three of the four Quarter-Finals in Tournament 2 went down to the wire on Wednesday, and finished with teams from France and Italy getting a step closer to the Regular Season. Heroes Den Bosch were the lone exception,in this bracket w inning without drama.

Cholet Basket looked like they were in for a smooth finish to the game, leading by seven with just a minute to play. However, Telenet Giants Antwerp had other ideas, knocking down a free throw, a big three-pointer, and a two-pointer to cut the gap to 73-72 with just 18 seconds left.

Antwerp even had a chance to tie or take the lead when Emmanuel Nzekwesi split a pair of free throws, but Keevan Veinot turned the ball over, allowing T.J. Campbell to ice the game from the line and set the final score at 76-72.

Tidjane Salaun scored a game-high 24 points, on 4-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Gerry Blakes was his usual self with 15 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds, while Neal Sako finished with 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting, with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals.

That wasn't the closest game of the day, because Pallacanesto Varese defeated FMP SoccerBet on a last-second shot. Olivier Hanlan delivered the knockout, hitting a two-pointer to make it 73-71, while leaving just enough time for FMP to attempt a full court shot which did not fall.

Varese got 17 points from Sean McDermott, Hanlan and Willie Cauley-Stein scored 13 apiece, with the latter getting 10 rebounds and 6 blocks. Davide Moretti finished with 12 points and 9 assists.

Cholet and Varese face each other in the Semi-Finals, while the other side of the bracket has a matchup between Happy Casa Brindisi and Heroes Den Bosch.

A dramatic finish with an Italian club seemed to be the theme of the day in Turkiye, as Brindisi survived a last second three-pointer for the tie, edging out CSM CSU Oradea 77-74 to advance to the next round.

Happy Casa were up by 15 earlier in the game and led by Jamel Morris (16 points), Jajuan Johnson (15) and Joonas Riismaa (14) looked to make it a stress-less ending. Oradea were not interested in such plans, and were one missed Kris Richard three-pointer from reaching overtime.

The only drama-less game of the day in this tournament was the one between Heroes Den Bosch and BG Gottingen. It was all about depth, coach Erik Braal seeing six men in double figures in a 96-84 win for the Dutch side.

Roberts Stumbris and Austin Price both had 17 points, Jito Kok collected 15 off the bench, Derrick Fenner scored 12, while Thomas van der Mars and Boy van Vliet equally combined for 20.

And yet, the best player of the game was the one in single digits. Demario Mayfield had 9 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds, all done while coming in as part of the second unit.

The Semi-Finals will be played on Friday. Cholet Basket and Pallacanestro Varese tip it off at 15:00 CET (16:00 local), followed by Happy Casa Brindisi and Heroes Den Bosch at 17:30 CET (18:30 local).
