Olympic Qualification

With regular and competitive tournaments scheduled throughout the year, the qualification system tips off in November 2023 to qualify teams for the Olympic Games.

For this current cycle, there will be a FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in one region - Americas – in November 2023, with 4 national teams playing in order to qualify for one of four global FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Accordingly, the 2 first placed teams in the FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament are qualified for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments taking place in February 2024. USA (winner of the FIBA Women's World Cup 2022) plus the best following ranked team in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023 are directly qualified for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024.

In the other regions (Africa, Asia/Oceania, and Europe), teams will qualify directly for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments from each FIBA Women's Continental Cup.

  • 4 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2023
  • 6 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023

A total of 16 teams will participate in one of four global FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments taking place from 8 to 11 February 2024, 12 of them, including the host (France*) and the Winner of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 (USA), will qualify to the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament.

The next Olympic Games will take place in Paris in 2024 from July 26 to August 11.

In 2028 the Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles from September 4 to 13.

For the next cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028, there will be a FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament taking place in August 2026. This tournament will include 8 teams not qualified from the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments 2026 to the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026, plus 8 teams from the FIBA Women's Continental Cups 2025 with a maximum of 4 teams per region. There will be 4 groups of 4 teams, where the best from each group will go to a Final Four. The winner of the Final Four will qualify for the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament taking place in early 2028.

The FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament will have 16 teams competing, including the winner of the FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2026* and will compete for the 12 spots in Los Angeles 2028.

  • 4 highest ranked teams in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2027
  • 6 highest ranked teams in the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2027 

The FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament will hold 4 tournaments of 4 teams, where the 3 best teams, including the host team (USA**), will qualify for the Olympics in Los Angeles 2028.

*depending on the geographical region of the winner of the Pre-OQT, the number of spots will be deducted from this region

FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup

National teams will qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 - FIBA's flagship women's competition - via four global FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments in March 2026.

The newly introduced FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournaments will take place in August 2024 and will include four teams not qualified from FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments to Paris 2024 plus 12 teams from FIBA Women's Continental Cups 2023, with a maximum of 4 teams per region. The 16 participating teams, 8 per tournament, will be played in 2 groups of 4 teams, with the top 2 teams from each group qualifying for the semi-finals for each event. The winners of each tournament will qualify for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournaments in 2026.

In 2022 FIBA's Central Board approved the expansion of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 to 16 teams. Accordingly, the FIBA Women's World Cup Qualifying Tournaments will feature a total of 24 teams, including the winner of the FIBA Women's World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament 2024, determined by their results in the four FIBA Women's Continental Cups in 2025.

There will be 4 tournaments of 6 teams, where 16 teams will qualify for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026. The host(s) and the winners of each Women’s Continental Cup 2025 will participate in these qualifiers; however, they receive automatic qualification for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026.
