Szolnoki Olaj stop the rot to damage Stelmet Zielona Gora Play-Off bid

SZOLNOK (Basketball Champions League) - Szolnoki Olaj won for the second time in the Basketball Champions League on Wednesday night to give new coach Zoran Kmezic a victorious debut.

Put in charge of the team on Sunday following the resignation of Stojan Ivkovic, Kmezic, who had a previous spell at the helm of the club that he also once played for, steered the team to an 86-75 triumph.

It was their first success since Gameday 2 and it came at the expense of a Stelmet Zielona Gora side that was looking to boost its chances of reaching the Play-Offs.

The Polish side had an opportunity to join Dinamo Sassari with a record of 5-7 in Group E but instead fell to 4-8 with just two rounds remaining.

The hosts went in front by as many as 15 points in the first half but coach Artur Gronek's Polish outfit, led by point guard James Florence, battled back.

They took their first advantage early in the fourth quarter but were then punished by ill discipline.

Playing in his second game in the competition, recent signing Luksa Andric of Croatia drew a foul from Armani Moore while in the act of shooting. The referee then called a technical on the American player for Stelmet Zielona Gora for complaining.

Andric made his two free-throws for being fouled on the shot, and then the technical free-throw, for a 63-62 lead. A 3-pointer with the shot-clock about to expire from Krisztian Wittmann followed on their next possession and the hosts pulled away.

Andric had 19 points while teammate and point guard Nikola Pavlicevic brought good energy while playing more than 30 minutes. He poured in 18 points and handed out 5 assists.

Milos Borisov finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners while Florence had 19 points in defeat.
