Tough Calls - Week 3

Each week, experts are analysing the games. In order to improve the understanding of referees' decisions and to increase the transparency towards our fans, we publish some of those "tough calls", together with an explanation. This week, the emphasis will be on Traveling and Unsportsmanlike Fouls.

Please find below last week's "tough calls":

Tough Call 1: Travel violation

When Green 10 drives to the basket he gathers the ball when his left foot is touching the floor. After that he can take two steps to shoot, pass or stop. Green 10 takes three steps after controlling the ball (right-left-right) resulting a travel violation. Outcome: correct decision by the referees.

Tough Call 2: Travel violation

Yellow 12 stops his dribble and land with two feet, when he can choose either foot as his pivot foot. After that he moves his left foot when the right foot becomes a pivot foot. Before taking the shot Yellow 12 moves his right foot (pivot foot) again and when it touches the floor, it is a travelling violation. Outcome: correct decision by the referees.

Tough Call 3: Travel violation - Post-play traveling

Green 6 makes a spin move in the low post. After he gathers the ball, he can take two steps to shoot, pass or stop. His first step is on right foot, what becomes a pivot foot, and second step on left foot correctly. After that, he moves the pivot foot again causing a travel violation. Outcome: correct decision by the referees.

Tough Call 4: Unsportsmanlike Foul in Attempt of Shooting

In this play, defensive player Green 22 creates an illegal contact with his left arm during the shot of White 32.
The contact is an obvious excessive hard contact resulting to an Unsportsmanlike Foul. Outcome: correct decision by the referees.

Tough Call 5: Unsportsmanlike Foul - Elbow

After the rebound situation, Green 22 starts returning to his back court, but when passing, the opponent hits him with the arm/elbow. The movement of Green 22 is not a basketball action and should be called as a Unsportsmanlike Foul, excessive hard contact. Outcome: correct decision by the referees.

Tough Call 6: Unsportsmanlike Foul - Normal foul POC

Black 8 dribbles the ball, starting the transition. White 3 tries to stop him legally, forcing Black 8 to spin with the ball. After that, Black 8 loses his balance and falls down due to the contact created by White 3 left foot, and the referee calls an Unsportsmanlike Foul. This action is incidental, but still an illegal contact as part of the game, and should be called as a normal defensive foul. Outcome: incorrect decision by the referees.
