Qualification Round 2 second leg by the numbers

(Basketball Champions League) – Qualification Round 2 action is now behind us but before we turn our attention to the eagerly-awaited Regular Season we have time to take a look at some noteworthy figures from Thursday’s games and the entire qualification process.

89 – The average offensive output of Muratbey Usak Sportif. The Turkish team will hold the distinction of the highest-scoring team in the Basketball Champions League, at least until the start of the Regular Season, by virtue of pouring in 93 and 85 points, respectively, in their two games against U-BT Cluj-Napoca.

46 – Rebounds collected by Bakken Bears in Thursday’s 83-70 win over BC Tartu. It is the second-highest volume of boards by one team so far in the BCL but what makes it more remarkable is that the top spot belongs to Tartu and it came at the expense of Bakken, as the Estonian side won the battle on the glass 48 to 32 in Tuesday’s first leg fixture.

40 – The number of teams that will take part in the Regular Season. The last eight berths were awarded through the Qualification Rounds with Kataja Basket, KK Mornar Bar, Juventus Utena, Pallacanestro Varese becoming last week the first four teams to earn a spot. Bakken Bears Aarhus, Ironi Nahariya, CSM Oradea and Muratbey Usak Sportif followed their example and punched their ticket through the last four ties. Romanian champions Oradea are the only team to have pulled it off by winning both their Qualification Round 1 tie (against Slovak champions Prievidza) and Qualification Round 2 tie (against Bulgarian champions Lukoil Academic).

34 - Rebounds grabbed by Venky Jois in the two games against Bakken Bears. The Australian will not get the chance to challenge for top-rebounder honours in the Basketball Champions League as BC Tartu will not play in the Regular Season, but averaging 12 rebounds over four games (a whopping 17.6 boards per 40 minutes of play) is certainly worth an honourouble mention.

31 – The efficiency rating of Michel Diouf in Bakken’s second-leg win. It was the second-highest rating registered during the Qualification Rounds, behind Daniel Mullings’s 39. Diouf finished on Thursday with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, but the most impressive part of his stat line was the eight blocks he came up with over the two-leg tie. The Senegalese center swatted away five Tartu shots in Game 1 and three in Game 2 and he is right now leading the BCL in blocks per game.

28 - Points scored by Sean Barnette in Oradea’s 83-70 win over Lukoil Academic. The American player of the Romanian champions helped his team advance and set the new BCL scoring-high record in the process. Barnette surpassed Igokea's Strahinja Micovic and KK Mornar's Antabia Waller, who had scored 24 points in Qualification Round 1 action.

17 – Consecutive unanswered points by Usak. The Turkish team used a 17-0 run in the final to storm past U-BT Cluj Napoca and secure the win that earned them the Group C spot. Cluj-Napoca went through a seven-minute stretch without scoring.

4 - The point-differential by which Ironi Nihariya defeated Tsmoki Minsk both on the road and at home. As if the sense of dejá vu was not strong enough, Nihariya scored the exact same amount of second-half points, 32, in both games. To keep up with the trend, the final score of the second game (71-67) was almost identical to the result of the first game (70-66)

3 - Players who recorded a double-double on Thursday. The afore-mentioned Diouf however was the only one to reap a reward for his efforts. Cluj-Napoca’s Vlad Moldoveanu had 18pts and 11 rebounds and his team-mate Ousmane Barro chipped in with 10 points and 12 boards but their exploits were not enough to prevent the Romanian side’s defeat to Usak Sportif.
