Play-Offs Round of 16 report: EWE Baskets and Banvit set up thriller in Turkey

OLDENBURG (Basketball Champions League) - EWE Baskets and Banvit have set up a winner-take-all game in Bandirma next week after finishing with a rare tie, 82-82, in the opening leg of their Play-Off Round of 16 tie on Tuesday evening in Germany.

The home side will feel the frustration after having possessed a double-digit lead multiple times in the contest before a 25-18 fourth quarter from Banvit led by Jordan Theodore.

EWE Baskets went in front by as many as 13 while Banvit neverled in the contest. Tolga Gecim's shot with a little under a minute remaining tied it up with neither side converting the rest of the way.

Theodore, the MVP of the Turkish Cup that was staged just over a week ago, caught fire in in the final period. He scored 13 of his 19 points over the last six minutes of the game to give Banvit confidence for their home leg. Banvit have not lost at home all season in the Basketball Champions League.

Gediminas Orelik knocked down five 3-pointers - four in the third quarter - on his way to a game-high 23 points for Banvit, whilst Furkan Kormaz added 13.

For EWE Baskets, Chris Kramer stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and 4 steals while Brian Qvale had 15 points and Rickey Paulding 14.

"We watched film, twice, yesterday and coming here, battled the way we did," Kramer said.

"Banvit's a great team, just won the Turkish Cup, (and are) playing with a lot of confidence. I thought we played very well in certain spurts of the game.

"Number 10 (Orelik) came in to the third quarter when things weren't going well for Banvit and hit some really tough shots that we played great defense on and gave them the momentum late in the game.

"Theodore hit some shots off the pick and roll to make the game closer, but I'm proud of our effort, regrouping the way we did, and this is half-time.

"We go to Banvit, the score is 0-0, and this next 40 minutes determines who goes on to the next round."

Kramer led EWE Baskets as they set the tone by jumping out to a 9-0 advantage. They extended their lead to 17-5 before a mini rally from Banvit with a Theodore buzzer buzzer bring them to within 5 at the end of the first quarter.

Oldenburg extended the lead to double digits again in the second quarter yet Banvit once again responded, getting to within two on multiple occasions, before EWE Baskets' Massenat found the bottom of the net with four seconds to play to hold a six-point half-time cushion.

In the third, Orelik put Banvit on his shoulders as he scored 16 points to keep them in it, though EWE Baskets would win the period by one to hold a seven-point advantage going into the final quarter.

From there, Theodore took over, finishing the comeback for Banvit and tying things up for the second leg in Turkey.
