Game of the Week: CSM CSU Oradea v Kataja Basket

A pair of clubs that have had roller-coaster seasons and are aiming at reaching the Basketball Champions League Play-Offs will meet in the Game of the Week on Wednesday when CSM CSU Oradea host Kataja Basket.

Each side goes into the clash in the midst of two-game losing streaks, but each is looking for a strong finish over the last two rounds of the Regular Season to get to the next stage of the competition.

Kataja Basket are fourth in Group B at 6-6 and Oradea are fifth at 5-7. The top four sides from each group and the four best fifth-placed teams will make it to the next stage of the competition.

In the first meeting between the two on 22 November, the Romanian outfit travelled to Finland and beat Kataja Basket, 80-74.

Sean Barnette had an outstanding performance with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and four steals but he has missed every Basketball Champions League game since owing to injuries.

Oradea did not look like a team that was capable of getting to the Play-Offs last week when they travelled to Ukraine and crashed to a 78-49 defeat. Khimik went into that contest with just two wins in their 11 Basketball Champions League games yet won big. The result left Oradea tied with sixth- and seventh-placed Avtodor Saratov and Maccabi Rand Media, respectively, with 5-7 records.

Oradea did bounce back and get an important win on the domestic front over the weekend when it overcame Steau Bucharest, 81-74.

Veteran point guard Branko Mirkovic hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points and Martin Zeno showed his all-round importance to the cause by not only scoring 10 points but handing out 10 assists.

"I'm glad that our team showed character after a less successful outing in Ukraine and that we have reacted and played so well," Oradea coach Christian Achim said.

"It is very difficult to play two games a week for months. I'm happy for the victory, but also for the way we showed in this game."

If Oradea have tired legs, at least they will be at home against Kataja.

"We meet a very complicated and dangerous opponent," Achim warned. "It is a new challenge. We know that it takes a huge effort and I want to say again that we are playing five months at this rate, so it's not exactly easy to recover so quickly."

Kataja Basket had been shorthanded on the interior after parting ways with Nino Johnson in December but they added big man Kervin Bristol and he played against Umana Reyer Venezia last week.

The Finnish club will be at home when it faces Pinar Karsiyaka in its last game next week while Oradea will have to travel to Italy to face Umana Reyer Venezia.
