Five takeaways from Day 2: Rytas break records; Igokea,Tofas and Jerusalem arrive in style

DEBRECEN (Hungary) - Day 2 in the Youth BCL in Debrecen saw the return of last year's winners Igokea m:tel and finalists Tofas Bursa.

Here are the Day 2 results:
- AEK Athens vs. Igokea m:tel: 55-90 (rewatch here)
- BK Opava vs. Tofas Bursa: 63-88 (rewatch here)
- Baskets Oldenburg vs. Hapoel Jerusalem: 69-73 (rewatch here)
- Promitheas Patras vs. Rytas Vilnius: 69-122 (rewatch here)
- Team Debrecen vs. Lenovo Tenerife: 50-64 (rewatch here)

And here are five takeaways from the second day of action:

#1 - The champs will take some stopping

Igokea cruised to a dominant win over AEK in the first game of the day. With a strong cohort of returning players it was no surprise that head coach Boris Jokanovic was targeting a repeat but the moment his team took to the floor, it was clear that this roster justified his goals.

Center Andrej Acimovic posted a first-half double-double in just 12 minutes, putting up 13 points and 11 rebounds. He wasn't needed for the second half as Igokea were able to get valuable minutes from the entire roster.

#2 - Tofas Bursa message heard loud and clear

Tofas reached the final last year, but came into this year's event with 10 new players on their roster.

Any questions raised about if they would be as strong again this year were firmly answered in their first game against Opava. The team from Bursa sent out a strong message that they are here to win this year.

They ran out 88-63 winners with Efe Postel leading the scorers with 18 points, and 2007-born forward Emirhan Serbest pulling down 17 rebounds, a tournament-high so far this year.

The block in the clip below puts the perfect exclamation mark on the message Tofas have sent in Debrecen.

#3 - Hapoel Jerusalem have the spirit

Hapoel Jerusalem put up a performance of spirit and determination to win the game of the tournament so far, 73-69 over Oldenburg.

If there was an award for the loudest bench, the Israelis would almost certainly claim that too. They rode that underdog spirit to overcome an impressive Oldenburg team.

After bursting out to a 7-0 lead to start the game  Jerusalem led for 33 minutes of the 40 but were forced to dig deep, as the the German side were still in the game all the way until a three-ball by Johann Helwig cut the deficit down to 3, with 15 seconds left in the game.

An impressive Yonatan Hellman nailed all of his free-throws to ice the game, finishing with a joint tournament-high 25 points, also adding 8 rebounds.

#4 - Rytas the record breakers

The Rytas Vilnius train rolled on to the next stop with a smooth journey through the challenge of Promitheas Patras. They set a new scoring record in the Youth BCL with 122 points, overtaking Igokea's 112 against Nymburk last year.

Rytas had seven players in double-digits for scoring, five of those with 15 or more points. Ignas Urbonas added another impressive performance with 20 points and 4 assists, shooting 85 percent from the floor, in just 14 minutes. Those are MVP candidate numbers right there.

#5 - Defense the key for Tenerife

The Canarians held Team Deberecen to just 24 percent shooting, forced 22 turnovers, and procured 15 steals as they took their second win and set up  a Semi-Finals decider against Rytas Vilnius tomorrow.

Noah Norgaard was again impressive with 22 points on 53.3 percent shooting. He was able to beat his man almost at will and led the frontcourt defensively with 4 steals.

Mohamed Sangare also added a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double. Tenerife look tough.
