Robinson big down the stretch as Bayreuth hold off Strasbourg

STRASBOURG (Basketball Champions League) - Media Bayreuth held on for an 82-77 win to hand SIG Strasbourg their second consecutive loss in the Basketball Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Strasbourg battled back from 20 points down to tie it up in the final two minutes before ultimately falling off the back of James Robinson coming up with a pair of huge baskets down the stretch.

Bayreuth improved to 6-3 with the win,a Strasbourg 5-4 with their second consecutive loss.

James Robinson had a game-high 21 points along with numerous clutch baskets, Gabe York went 7-for-9 for his 19 points, and De'Mon Brooks added 11.

"I think it's pretty safe to say that even when we were up by 20 we didn't expect it to be easy in the second half," Nate Linhart said after the game.

"We know how good of a team Strasbourg is and the quality they play with normally, so we were pretty focused at halftime in coming out the right way.

"It's a credit to them that they really came back, that's how good of a team they are, but I think we made enough big plays in the end, James Robinson really carried us and we got it done."

David Logan had 20 points to lead Strasbourg, with Dee Bost adding 16 and Louis Labeyrie 15.

Bayreuth pounced on Strasbourg early, using a 12-3 run punctuated by a Brooks three-pointer to take a 15-8 lead midway through the opening period. Robinson registered 8 points in the quarter as the visitors led 27-17 after one.

The lead grew to as many as 19 in the second quarter, before Strasbourg fought back to pull within 44-32 at halftime. Gabe York reached double figures with 10 points at the break, as Bayreuth went 8 of 12 from three and shot over 60% overall in the first half.

York hit a tough step back three to open the third period, before a Robinson three extended Bayreuth's lead to 20, 52-32, and it appeared the visitors were in cruise control.

However, Strasbourg were not done yet. Bost made two free throws at end of the third quarter to pull them back to 55-62 heading into the final quarter and when Leloup hit a huge three with 5 minutes remaining to pull Strasbourg within two, 68-66, the stage was set for a dramatic finish.

It was of course Robinson who responded, knocking down two free throws before scoring on the break to widen the cushion to 66-72 with four minutes to play.

Dee Bost hit a huge open three to tie the game up at at 72 with 2:43 left, before Robinson once again responded with back to back buckets.

When David Logan hit a huge three with 44 seconds left it was Strasbourg's last attempt to break the game, but Robinson hit another big shot in the lane as Bayreuth held on for the win.
