Zakis late show earns Ventspils narrow win over Iberostar Tenerife

VENTSPILS (Basketball Champions League) - Ronalds Zakis capped a terrific performance with a go-ahead basket just seven seconds from the death to lift Ventspils to a 73-72 triumph over Iberostar Tenerife on Wednesday night in Latvia.

Taking on the defending champions, Ventspils trailed by seven in the third quarter but didn't allow the Canary Islanders to pull away and ended up claiming a famous win with Zakis dunking his way to 14 points. The veteran center also collected 8 rebounds.

Iberostar Tenerife had a chance to win the game at the end but Aigars Skele got a hand in the face of Nicolas Richotti when he attempted a 3-pointer. The shot was off target and the home team celebrated a big victory.

Ventspils did a lot of their damage at the free-throw line, sinking 18 of their 21 (85.71%) attempts on the night. The visitors hurt their own cause with a 4-of-21 effort from behind the arc.

Maris Gulbis had 13 points, Julius Jucikas 12, Skele 10 and Blake Hamilton 9 for the winners. Rookie Mike Tobey scored a game-high 20 points in defeat for Iberostar Tenerife.

The visitors never got one of their most important players going with Tim Abromaitis missing both of his shots from the floor and failing to score. Captain Richotti had 14 points but was just 2 of 9 from 3-point range.
