Slovenian powerhouse Olimpija Ljubljana to join the Basketball Champions League

MIES, Switzerland (Basketball Champions League) - The 2016/17 national champion of Slovenia will play in the upcoming Basketball Champions League Regular Season with more champions and leading clubs from across the continent due to sign-up as domestic league positions are finalized.

With Olimpija Ljubljana, the roster of clubs for the Basketball Champions League Regular Season counts another national champion, after Stelmet Zielona Gora of Poland and CEZ Nymburk of the Czech Republic signed up earlier this week. Leading clubs from Greece and Italy have already signed up and will join defending champions Iberostar Tenerife. The full line-up for the season is due to be completed in the coming weeks as domestic business is completed.

The newly-confirmed club will face stiff competition in the Basketball Champions League which features top clubs from across Europe which qualify as a result of their performances in domestic leagues.

Olimpija Ljubljana has an impressive set of records and a remarkable list of trophies. FIBA Saporta Cup winner in 1994, they have secured 22 national championship titles, 20 Slovenian Cups as well as the first edition of the Adriatic League in 2002.

"I’m delighted to welcome Olimpija Ljubljana in the Basketball Champions League," said Basketball Champions League CEO Patrick Comninos.

"As recent Slovenian champion, they have to be congratulated for wining their domestic title. I am convinced that a club with such notable history and achievements will bring something special to next year’s competition, and I hope this will be a unique experience for their fans."

Basketball Champions League Regular season gets under way on October 10. This year 32 teams will contest the Regular Season with eight qualifiers joining 24 directly qualified clubs. They will play in four groups of 8 teams each with the top four in each group going through to a home and away Round of 16 ahead of the Quarter-Finals which will determine the Final Four.

An initial draw sorting the Qualification Rounds and the Regular Season phase will take place on Tuesday 11 July at the House of Basketball in Geneva, Switzerland.
