Perfect Besiktas end AEK run to stay atop Group E

ATHENS (Basketball Champions League) – A laser-focused Besiktas Sompo Japan prevailed 88-78 over AEK on the road in the great battle between previously unbeaten teams in Group E on Wednesday night and have extended their global winning streak to the season to eight games.

"We won by 10 points here and we also won against Partizan so we have a great advantage in the group right now." - Ufuk Sarica

Besiktas assumed control of proceedings in the second quarter and led by as many as 13 points, 47-34, but AEK came back from the break with renewed determination and tied the scores at 64-all shortly after the start of the final stanza. A superb jumper by Michael Thompson however instigated a 13-2 run for the visitors and Besiktas reclaimed a 77-66 lead with 4:21 remaining, leaving AEK with a mountain to climb.

"We did a great job tonight in what was our fourth game in only 10 days and despite battling some injuries," said Besiktas head coach Ufuk Sarica afterwards. "It's not easy to win here, it was the most difficult away game so far for us but we played very aggressively and very smart.

"We got in control of the game in the first half and only lost it in the beginning of the third quarter. AEK of course is very dangerous team and almost came back, but I congratulate my players for getting it done."

Earl Clark was superb for the winners and led the way with 24 points and eight rebounds, DJ Strawberry added 14 points while Thompson finished with 13 as the Turkish side dominated the boards 40 to 28 and scored 13 second-chance points.

"We won by 10 points here and we also won against Partizan so we have a great advantage in the group right now, but we still have to play many games so we will see what this will mean in the end," Sarica said.
