Oradea finish strong to deny Prievidza

ORADEA (Basketball Champions League) – CSM Oradea trailed Prievidza by six points early in the second half but switched gears in the final 15 minutes to claim a hard-fought 71-64 win at home in the first leg of the Qualification Round 1 tie between the two sides on Tuesday.

After Prievidza pulled ahead 43-37 with 7:53 left to play in the third quarter, Branko Mirkovic drilled a triple to spark a 13-0 run for Oradea and the Romanian team turned the game on its head within a four-minute stretch, 50-43. The two sides traded blows in the final frame as both opponents tried their luck repeatedly from long range with little success and neither managed to enjoy a dominant stretch again.

Sean Denison shot 7-of-12 from the floor and paved the way for Oradea with 17 points and eight rebounds, Muhamed Pasalic added 16 points while Mirkovic finished with 13 points and eight assists. Rastko Dramicanin had 18 points and eight boards for Prievidza in a losing effort.

Preividza play host to Oradea in the return leg in the Slovak Republic on Thursday and will look to overturn the 7-point deficit. The winner of this tie will advance to Round 2 where Bulgarian champions Lukoil Academic await.
