Semi-Final game report: Abromaitis leads Iberostar Tenerife to Final

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA (Basketball Champions League) - Iberostar Tenerife set up a Basketball Champions League Final meeting with Banvit after a 67-58 win over Umana Reyer Venezia in the Final Four on Friday evening in Tenerife.

Tim Abromaitis was unstoppable early, scoring 17 of his 19 in the first half and adding 9 rebounds, as Tenerife opened the third period on a 10-0 run and never looked back.

"We're obviously very happy with the win," Abromaitis said. "That was our number 1 objective. It wasn't the prettiest game but that's the way a lot of our games go, where we just have to grind it out, play defence.

"I think when the game started going we got more of the rebounds and loose balls and the things we needed to do to win, and that was the difference."

Aaron Doornekamp had 11 points while hitting three shots from beyond the arc, and Georgios Bogris joined him in double figures with 10 points.

Tenerife Head Coach Txus Vidoretta commented:

"It was a very tough game. You know that Umana Reyer Venezia is one of the best teams in the competition, not only in this competition but the Italian league.

"They started the game very well, but in the second and third quarter our defence was great, and then finally we took a great advantage and we could keep it during the last quarter when we were physically a little tired.

"But the difference in these 20 minutes was great, and we are very happy we are in the place we dreamed, not in October, but before; last summer, when we knew we had the chance to play in this BCL competition."

Venezia were led by 13 points from MarQuez Haynes, and 11 from Hrvoje Peric as the only other player in double digits.

"Congratulations to Tenerife, I think they deserved to win this game," Michael Bramos said.

"We had some good moments but overall they just played better than us throughout the whole game. The experience in the Champions League has been good, this even has been well run and I think it was a good crowd for both games today, so overall it was a good experience."

Umana Reyer Venezia Head Coach Walter De Raffaele echoed Bramos' sentiments:

"Congratulations to Tenerife, they really deserved to go to the final. For us to win this game, we knew that we needed a 40 minute game, like we start and impact the game, pressure for all the game long, and I think Tenerife did this better than us.

"In the clutch moments we stopped moving the ball and it was such a physical game they really put big pressure on us and broke the game.

"We tried to come back, but at the end, Tenerife really deserved the game. For us, it's a great experience for this semi-final, we're a little disappointed to not reach the final, but we need to play after tomorrow (for third-place) to close this championship the best way."

Umana Reyer took the early advantage behind the play of Peric who had 6 points, and went into the first quarter break 21-16 up as Haynes hit a huge three to end the period.

The 10-3 start to the game for the Italian side put them in good stead, but Tenerife kept their cool under pressure. Abromaitis opened the second period on a 7-0 run by himself, and continued to pile it on as Tenerife finished the half on an 11-2 run.

Haynes stemmed the bleeding after an open lay up down the lane to beat the halftime buzzer, taking his personal tally into double digits, but Tenerife held the 40-34 halftime advantage.

Abromaitis had a half to remember, pouring in 17 points without missing a field goal or free throw.

In the third, a 10-0 start saw Tenerife get their first double digit lead of the game, extending it to 50-34 and being comfortably in control the rest of the way.

Reyer did respond with a 8-3 run of their own, but a 5-0 start to open the fourth quarter, punctuated by a Doornekamp three, saw Tenerife hold their biggest lead of the game at 19 and would go on to book their Final spot on Sunday against Banvit.

Iberostar Tenerife will face Banvit in the 2017 Basketball Champions League Final on Sunday at 19:15 (GMT+1), after Umana Reyer take on AS Monaco in the Third-Place game on at 16:15 (GMT+1).
