Week 9 Tuesday/Wednesday games preview

MIES (Switzerland) - We've reached the next-to-last week of the regular season in the Basketball Champions League, and there will be seven games between December 14-15, all of them having major implications on the standings.

Here's a look at the four games on Tuesday:

Game 1: VEF Riga (1-3) vs. Nutribullet Treviso (3-1) - Group D

Where: Riga, Latvia

When: 19:00

First meeting this season: Treviso defeated Riga 91-85.

 

  • Riga have won just one of their last 10 games in the BCL, but it was in their most recent match at home (92-76 vs. AEK); they conceded 91 points against Treviso in the last game, the most in a single game this season.
  • Treviso have won three of their four games in the BCL this season, with the only defeat happening in their most recent away game (80-81 at Falco Szombathely).
  • Riga are making 22.5 assists per game on average this season in the BCL, more than any other team, while Treviso are ranking fourth in that ranking with 21 assists per game; Riga were averaging only 16.3 assists per game last season in the competition.
  • Kristers Zoriks has scored more than 20 points in two of his last three appearances with Riga in the BCL, after never doing it so in his previous 13 games in the league; he scored 22 in his most recent match (vs. AEK) but has never scored 20+ in consecutive league games.
  • Aaron Jones has grabbed 10+ rebounds in his last two BCL games; he is the only player in the league this season to have grabbed 10 or more rebounds in multiple games off the bench.

Game 2: Besiktas Icrypex (2-2) vs. Hereda San Pablo Burgos (3-1) - Group H

Where: Istanbul, Turkey

When: 20:00

First meeting this season: Burgos defeated Besiktas 82-74.

 

  • Besiktas have won five of their last six home games in the BCL; however, they have lost the only home game they have played against a Spanish team (73-74 vs. Basket Zaragoza in October 2019) – in fact, Besiktas have lost all three BCL games against Spanish teams, including the last game against Burgos (74-82).
  • Burgos have won six of their last seven games in the BCL, with the only defeat in that span being on the road (69-87 at Rytas Vilnius); Burgos have lost a total of 10 games since they joined the BCL, with nine of those defeats happening away from home.
  • Besiktas have made an average of 24 2-pointers per game in the BCL this season, more than any other team, while only one team has made more 3-pointers on average than Burgos (12.5 per game).
  • Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has scored 23.5 points when starting the game for Besiktas but only 9.0 when coming off the bench in the BCL this season; Hollis-Jefferson has also made 2+ blocks in three of his four games in the competition.
  • Vítor Benite has scored a total of 663 points, the fifth most by any player in the BCL; he scored 27 points against Besiktas in the last game, the second most for him in a single BCL game – however, he has not scored more than 10 points in any of his three BCL trips to Turkey.

Game 3: AEK (1-3) vs. Falco Szombathely (3-1) - Group D

Where: Athens, Greece

When: 19:30

First meeting this season: Szombathely defeated AEK 83-78.

  • AEK lost the last game against Szombathely, but haven't lost both games against a single team in the BCL regular season since the 2017-18 campaign (Strasbourg and Bandirma).
  • Szombathely have alternated between wins and losses in their last five away games in the BCL (W2 L3); they have won an away game this season but have not won multiple road games in a single campaign.
  • AEK have conceded on average 86.5 points per game, more than any other team in the BCL 2021-22; only once before they conceded as many points after four games played in a BCL season, it was 2017-18 when they managed to lift the trophy at the end of the season (88.5 pts per game conceded after 4 games played).
  • Ian Hummer has scored 10+ points in each of his last nine BCL games after scoring in double figures in five of his previous 14 league appearances; Hummer is averaging 17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game this season, while making 57% of his field goals, 40% of his shots from behind the arc and 100% from the FT line.
  • Zoltan Perl has scored 10+ points in his last 12 games in the BCL, tied for the longest active streak of games amongst all players currently in the league (also Patrick Richard); Perl is the only player to have combined for 20+ points, 5+ rebounds and 5+ assists in a single game while coming from the bench in the BCL this season – it was against AEK in the last meeting.

Game 4: JDA Dijon (2-2) vs. Lavrio Megabolt (2-2) - Group C

Where: Dijon, France

When: 20:30

First meeting this season: Lavrio defeated Dijon 65-63.

 

  • Dijon have won seven of their last eight home games in the BCL, with six of those wins being by margins of 10 or more points; they have lost their only previous encounter with Lavrio in the competition (63-65).
  • Lavrio have lost two of their four games in the BCL this season, with both defeats happening on the road; both their away losses were by margins of 12 or more points.
  • Dijon scored only three 3-pointers in each of their last two BCL games after making fewer than five 3-pointers only twice in their previous 42 games in the competition; they are scoring 26.6% of their attempts from behind the arc this season after never making fewer than 30% of their 3-pointers in any of their previous seasons in the BCL.
  • Dijon are one of the two teams, alongside Happy Casa Brindisi, yet to have a player scoring more than 20 points in a BCL game this season; no Dijon player managed to be the best point scorer twice for its team in a game this season.
  • Lavrio's Jerry Smith scored 23 points in his last BCL game against Nizhny Novgorod, after scoring a total of 14 points in his previous three appearances in the competition; his overall of 37 points scored while coming from the bench is slightly lower than all the other players that came from the bench with Lavrio combined (41 points).

Here's a look at the three games on Wednesday:

Game 1: U-BT Cluj Napoca (3-1) vs. Happy Casa Brindisi (1-3) - Group G

Where: Cluj-Napoca, Romania

When: 19:00

First meeting this season: Cluj Napoca defeated Brindisi 76-71.

 

  • Cluj Napoca have won three of their four games in the BCL, including their two home matches and the last game against Brindisi; the Romanians scored 106 points in their most recent game (two overtimes), after scoring an average of 70 points per game in their previous three.
  • Brindisi have won their most recent game in the BCL (82-73 vs. Darüssafaka) after losing the previous five; they have conceded 73 points in their last game but have never conceded fewer than 75 points in consecutive league encounters.
  • Cluj Napoca are allowing 77.2 possessions per game to their opponents, more than any other team in the BCL this season, however, Brindisi are scoring only 0.96 points per possession, fewer than any other team.
  • Patrick Richard has scored 10+ points in his last 12 games in the BCL, tied for the longest active streak of games amongst all players currently in the league (also Zoltan Perl); he scored 24 points in the last game against Brindisi, the most he has scored in a BCL game and more than any other player in that game.
  • Brindisi's Nick Perkins scored 19 points in the last game against Cluj Napoca, tied for his best tally in a BCL game; he has scored 15 more points (54) and grabbed 10 more rebounds (29) than any other Brindisi player this season.

Game 2: Hapoel U-NET Holon (2-2) vs. Darussafaka (2-2) - Group G

Where: Holon, Israel

When: 21:00

First meeting this season: Darussafaka defeated Holon 86-79.

 

  • Holon have been alternating between wins and losses in their last nine home games in the BCL (W5 L4), with the Israeli side winning their only match at home this season (78-68 vs. Cluj Napoca).
  • Darüssafaka have lost each of their five away games in the BCL, however their last two have ended with single-digit margins after the first three being lost by margins of 10+ points.
  • Darüssafaka are making the most steals per game in the BCL this season (11) but are also conceding the most turnovers per game (18.5); they have the lowest ratio of assists per turnovers in the competition this season (0.76 ast/to).
  • Holon's Chris Johnson scored 25 points in the game last week against Darüssafaka, the most among his team this season and his personal best in a BCL game; he has scored 10+ points in each of his last four BCL games, his best run in the competition (27 appearances).
  • Darussafaka's Isaiah Pineiro scored 25 points last week against U-NET Holon, second best tally for a bench player with Darüssafaka in a BCL game (Andrew Andrews 28 points on January 13, 2021), after scoring a total of 14 points in his first three appearances in the competition, all played as a starter.

Game 3: Unicaja (3-1) vs. Nizhny Novgorod (1-3) - Group C

Where: Malaga, Spain

When: 20:30

First meeting this season: Unicaja defeated Nizhny 79-62.

 

  • Unicaja have lost their most recent game in the BCL (68-78 at Dijon) after winning their previous three; the Spanish side are still unbeaten at home, winning both their games by an average margin of 22.5 points.
  • Nizhny have won their most recent BCL match (74-62 vs. Lavrio) after losing their previous six; this will be their fourth BCL trip to Spain, where they are yet to win a game – in fact, they have won just one of the eight matchups they have played against teams from that country.
  • Unicaja have conceded only 66 points per game, the lowest average in the BCL this season; the last team that conceded as few points after four games played of a BCL season was Lenovo Tenerife in 2018-19 (65 pts conceded per game).
  • Dario Brizuela has scored 16+ points in each of his last three BCL games, being Unicaja's best scorer in each of those games; he scored 16+ points in only one of his previous 15 appearances in the competition.
  • Ivan Strebkov is leading Nizhny in points (53), rebounds (20), assists (19) and steals (3) in the BCL this season, despite starting two of his four games on the bench.
