Week 9 - Tuesday Games Preview

MIES (Switzerland) - Week nine, the second-to-last week of the Basketball Champions League regular season, is right around the corner starting with a full five-game slate on Tuesday December 13, and teams will be looking to punch tickets to the next round and avoid elimination.

Here's a look at the five games on Tuesday:

Game 1: Bakken Bears (0-4) v Darussafaka (2-2) - Group E

Where: Aarhus, Denmark

When: 18:00 CET

In their last game, Darussafaka won against MHP RIESEN, 77-63, while Bakken lost to Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem 89-80. Bakken would be eliminated from the competition with a defeat to Darussafaka or with a win by less than 15 points.

 

  • Bakken are the only team to have lost all their BCL games this season (0-4), including the last game against Darussafaka (80-66); however, they have won two of their last three home games in the league, including the last time they faced a Turkish side at home (96-78 v Galatasaray in January 2021).
  • Elijah Childs is the only player to have grabbed 5+ rebounds in each of Bakken's first four games in the BCL this season, despite starting all those games on the bench; he recorded his best tallies of points (24) and rebounds (8) in his last game, against Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem.
  • Darussafaka have won two of their last three away games in the BCL after winning only one of the previous 10 but are yet to win consecutive away games in the competition; they were leading at halftime in seven of their last nine away games in the BCL.
  • Darussafaka have made the fewest three-pointers per game in the BCL this season, making an average of 5.5 per game with a 23.2 percent ratio, also the lowest in the league this season; however, they scored nine three-pointers in the last game against Bakken, the most for them in a league game in 2022-23.
  • Ercan Osmani (Darussafaka) registered his first double-double in the BCL during his last game, against MHP RIESEN (15 points, 10 rebounds); in fact, he has averaged 12.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2 blocks in his last two BCL games after averaging 4.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in his first two appearances.

 

Game 2: ERA Nymburk (1-3) v Igokea m:tel (2-2) - Group D

Where: Prague, Czech Republic

When: 18:30 CET

In their last game, Igokea defeated Surne Bilbao 84-81, while Nymburk lost to Bahcesehir College 88-80. Nymburk would be eliminated with a defeat to Igokea.

 

  • The home team of the day has won each of the previous three BCL matchups between Nymburk and Igokea; Nymburk have won their last home game in the competition (79-76 v Bahcesehir College) but haven't won consecutive home games in the regular season since the start of last season.
  • Gerel Simmons scored 27 points in his last BCL game, against Bahcesehir, the most for a Nymburk player this season in the competition; however Simmons is only averaging 5.5 points per game when playing at home, comparing to 22.5 points per game when playing away from home.
  • Igokea won their last away game 84-81 in Bilbao, but are yet to win consecutive away games in the BCL; they were trailing at halftime in only two of their eight away games played in the BCL regular season.
  • Igokea have made (22.8) and attempted (42.3) more two-point shots than any other in the BCL this season; however, they are the team with the lowest shooting percentage from the foul line (60.3 percent).
  • Igokea's Nikola Tanaskovic combined for 16 points and 15 rebounds in the last game against Nymburk, the only time a player scored 15+ points and grabbed 15+ rebounds in a BCL game this season; Tanaskovic has averaged 12 rebounds in his last three BCL games after averaging 3 rebounds per game in his previous eight BCL appearances.

Game 3: MHP RIESEN (3-1) v Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem (3-1) - Group E

Where: Ludwigsburg, Germany

When: 18:30 CET

In their last game, Jerusalem defeated Bakken 89-80, while RIESEN lost to Darussafaka 77-63. RIESEN would win the group and qualify to the Round of 16 with a win over Jerusalem and Jerusalem, meanwhile, would win the group and qualify to the Round of 16 with a win over RIESEN by 10 or more points, and if Bakken also defeat Darussafaka.

 

  • RIESEN lost their last game in the BCL, at home against Darussafaka 77-63, but have not lost consecutive games since a stretch of three defeats between January-February 2019; they lost the last time they hosted a team from Israel in the BCL, 71-68 against Hapoel Atsmon Holon in March 2022.
  • RIESEN have conceded 4.3 shots from behind the arc per game, the fewest in the BCL in 2022-23; the German side have conceded 0.94 points per possession, the best defensive average this season.
  • Prentiss Hubb is the only player to have scored more than 10 points in each of RIESEN's four games in the BCL this season; Hubb has also scored multiple three-pointers and made at least one steal in each of his games.
  • Jerusalem's only defeat this season in the BCL came against RIESEN (80-71) and they have won the most recent two games in the competition; they have won each of their last three away games in the BCL regular season after losing the previous four.
  • Jerusalem's Speedy Smith had 14 assists in his last game, against Bakken Bears, the most for a player in a BCL game this season; he has made exactly nine assists in each of his last three away games in the competition.

Game 4: PAOK mateco (1-3) v Unicaja (4-0) - Group G

Where: Thessaloniki, Greece

When: 18:30 CET

In their last game, Unicaja defeated JDA Bourgogne Dijon 91-70, while PAOK lost to Dinamo BDS Sassari 82-78. Unicaja are already through as group winners.

 

  • PAOK have lost seven of their last eight games in the BCL, including the last game against Unicaja (77-63) but the sole win in that span came in their most recent home game (88-68 v Dinamo BDS Sassari); PAOK were trailing at halftime in each of their last nine home games in the BCL (3-6 in those games).
  • Jalen Riley has averaged 22.2 points per game in his last five BCL home appearances, scoring at least three three-pointers in each of those games; he also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists in those games.
  • Unicaja are the only team to have won all their games in the BCL this season (4-0), including a 14-point victory over PAOK in the last game (77-63); they have outscored their opponents in the fourth quarter in 16 of their 17 BCL games.
  • Unicaja have allowed their opponents to grab only 6.0 offensive rebounds per game, fewer than any other team in the BCL this season; they have grabbed 81.3 percent of the rebounds on their defensive basket, the highest rebounding rate in the league in 2022-23.
  • Dario Brizuela scored 27 points in the last game against PAOK, the only time a Unicaja player has scored 20+ points in a BCL game this season and the most for a player with the Spanish team in a game in the competition; Brizuela has averaged 17.7 points per game in his last three BCL appearances, all as a bench player, after averaging 5.3 points per game in his previous three appearances, all played as a starter.

Game 5: Dinamo BDS Sassari (1-3) v JDA Bourgogne Dijon (2-2) - Group G

Where: Sassari, Italy

When: 20:30 CET

In their last game, Sassari defeated PAOK 82-78, while Dijon are coming off a loss to Unicaja 91-70. Dijon would finish second in the group, earning home court advantage in the Play-In Series, if they beat Sassari, and if PAOK lose to Unicaja. Sassari on the other hand, would be eliminated with a defeat to Dijon, if PAOK defeat Unicaja.

 

  • Sassari won their last game in the BCL, 82-78 at home against PAOK, but are yet to win consecutive games since a stretch of three wins in October-November 2020; Sassari have lost five of their last seven BCL games against French teams, including the last game against Dijon (88-80).
  • De'Shawn Stephens registered a double-double in his first BCL appearance with Sassari (15 points, 10 rebounds v PAOK), his fifth overall in the competition; Stephens has scored 10+ points in each of his 10 games in the competition where he played at least 25 minutes (16.2 points per game), also averaging 8.6 rebounds per game in those games.
  • Dijon have alternated between wins and defeats in their last eight BCL games, losing the most recent one, but have not lost consecutive games since two defeats in a row in January 2021; the French side have also won only one of their last five away games in the BCL regular season.
  • Dijon's Markis McDuffie has averaged 16 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game in his three BCL appearances as a starter; he also made multiple three-pointers in two of those three games.
  • Dijon's David Holston is currently ranked 11th in the BCL in points scored (680); he has one less point than Kyle Wiltjer (681) and three less than Vitor Benite (683). Holston is also ranked as the third player with the most assists ever (321) and the all-time steals (94) leader in the league.
