Week 2 - Round of 16 Game of the Week: The Israeli Derby

HOLON (Israel) - This week's Round of 16 Game of the Week in the Basketball Champions League between Hapoel Atsmon Holon and Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem features a bit of history, as two teams from Israel will meet for the first time ever in the competition.

Where: Holon, Israel (Holon Toto Arena)

When: 18:30 CET

Both Holon and Jerusalem come into this game at 0-1 after losing their first Round of 16 game to SIG Strasbourg 112-110 in double overtime, and JDA Bourgogne Dijon 84-77, respectively. The winner will gain some momentum going forward in the round, but the loser will drop to 0-2 and face a little bit of an uphill battle as they search for a win.

While the two teams have never faced each other in the BCL, they have met in their domestic league once this season back in October, with Holon coming out on top 80-76.

Holon's Joe Ragland was just named the MVP of the Month for January after averaging 19.7 points, 11.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game in three games played, as Holon went 2-1 in those games (two Play-In games, one in the Round of 16).

  • This will be the first-ever Israeli matchup in BCL history; Holon has won their last nine home games, their longest winning streak in the competition - they have scored more than 100 points in each of their last two games at their home venue.
  • Holon have scored 123.1 points per 100 possessions, the highest offensive ratio of any team in the BCL this season; Holon are the only team making 80 percent or more of their attempted free-throws (83.9 percent) and 40 percent or more from behind the arc (40.9 percent) in the league in 2022-23.
  • Ragland is averaging 16.1 points and 11.3 assists per game in the BCL in 2022-23; no player has ever finished a BCL season with averages of 10+ points and 10+ assists (min. two games).
  • Jerusalem are undefeated on the road in the BCL this season (3-0), scoring more than 85 points in each of their last two games away from home; however, four of their last five road games ended with differentials of six or fewer points.
  • Jerusalem have conceded just 16.1 points per game in the fourth quarter, while no team has conceded fewer than them in the final quarter in the BCL this season (also Lenovo Tenerife with 16.1); on average, they've scored 5.1 more points per game than their opponents in the last period of the game, tied for the most with Unicaja.
