Tough Calls - Week 7

 MIES (Switzerland) - Each week, experts are analyzing the games. In order to improve the understanding of referees' decisions and to increase the transparency towards our fans, we publish some of those "tough calls", together with an explanation.

Tough Call 1: Bahcesehir College vs ERA Nymburk - Unsportmanslike Foul

White 21 gets the ball in a rebound. He then turns around and hits with his elbow against Black 31 face. The referees call an offensive foul to White 21. The referees become uncertain whether the foul should be considered as unsportsmanlike and decide to use the IRS review. After the review, they decide to upgrade it to unsportsmanlike foul.

Article 37.1.1    An unsportsmanlike foul is a player contact which, in the judgement of a referee is:

  • Excessive, hard contact caused by a player in an effort to play the ball or an opponent.

F.3.3                    The following game situations may be reviewed at any time of the game:

  • whether a personal, unsportsmanlike or disqualifying foul met the criteria for such a foul or shall be upgraded or downgraded or shall be considered as a technical foul.

Outcome: Incorrect initial decision from the referees, corrected after the IRS review. The contact created by White 21 met one of the criteria to be considered an unsportsmanlike foul. Black 21 shall attempt 2 free throws with no line-up and the game shall be resumed with a Black team throw-in from the throw-in line in their frontcourt and 14 seconds on the shot clock.

 

Tough Call 2: Bahcesehir College vs ERA Nymburk - Unsportsmanlike Foul

Black 13 drives to the basket. After stopping, he turns around and a contact occurs against defender White 7. An offensive foul is called to Black 7. The referees become uncertain whether the foul should be considered as unsportsmanlike and decide to use the IRS review. After the review, they decide to upgrade it to unsportsmanlike foul.

Article 37.1.1     An unsportsmanlike foul is a player contact which, in the judgement of a                              referee is:

  • Excessive, hard contact caused by a player in an effort to play the ball or an opponent.

Tough Call 3: Surne Bilbao vs Igokea m:tel - Shooter's Foul

Black 2 attempts a jump shot and falls to the court. The referee calls a technical foul to Black 2 for repetition of standard fake being fouled after the Black team had received a previous warning for a similar action.

Article 33.2        The offensive player, whether on the court or airborne, shall not cause contact with the defensive player in a legal guarding position by:
• Spreading his/her legs or arms during or immediately after a shot for a goal.

Outcome: Incorrect decision from the referees. Black 2 is responsible for the contact as he spread his right leg outside of his cylinder immediately after the shot creating a disadvantage to his opponent. A personal foul should have been called to Black 2. The game would have been resumed with a White team throw-in from the place closest to where the illegal contact occurred and 24 seconds on the shot clock.

 

Tough Call 4: Peristeri bwin vs Rytas Vilnius - Shooters’s Foul

Yellow 3 attempts a jump shot and falls to the court. The referees decide not to call any foul and the game continues.

Article 33.2        The offensive player, whether on the court or airborne, shall not cause contact with the defensive player in a legal guarding position by:
• Spreading his/her legs or arms during or immediately after a shot for a goal.

Outcome: Incorrect decision from the referees. Yellow 3 is responsible for the contact as he spread his right leg outside of his cylinder immediately after the shot creating a disadvantage to his opponent. A personal foul should have been called to Yellow 3. The game would have been resumed with a Red team throw-in from the place closest to where the illegal contact occurred and 24 seconds on the shot clock.

 

Tough Call 5: JDA Bourgogne Dijon vs Unicaja  - Unsportsmanlike Foul

Green 14 steals the ball and dribbles towards the opponents’ basket. During the lay-up, defender White 11 creates a contact. The referees call an Unsportsmanlike Foul to White 11.

Outcome: Correct decision from the referees. The contact created by White 11 met one of the criteria to be considered an unsportsmanlike foul. Green 14 shall attempt 2 free throws with no line-up and the game shall be resumed with a Green team throw-in from the throw-in line in their frontcourt and 14 seconds on the shot clock.
