Week 7 Tuesday/Wednesday games preview

MIES (Switzerland) - Week seven of the Basketball Champions League is right around the corner, as round robin matchups continue with seven games between Nov. 16 and Nov. 17.

Here's a look at the two games on Tuesday:

Game 1: JDA Dijon (1-2) vs. Unicaja (3-0) - Group C

Where: Dijon, France

When: 20:30

First meeting this season: 1 November 2021, Unicaja 83 Dijon 54

 

  • Four of Dijon's last six games in the BCL have seen final margins greater than 25 points, including in their last game against Unicaja (L 54-83); they have won six of their last seven home games in the BCL, those wins coming with an average margin of 19 points.
  • Unicaja won their first three games in the BCL and could become the fourth Spanish team to win their first four games in the competition; they have a point difference of +62, the biggest differential this season in the competition.
  • Dijon and Unicaja have both made 8.7 free-throws on average per game this season in the BCL, fewer than any other team; however, Unicaja have the best 2P% (60.6%) and the best 3P% (45.3%) this season.
  • Dijon have scored 61.2% of their points from 2-pointers in the BCL 2021-22, highest ratio of any team while 64.5% of the points conceded by Unicaja came from 2-point shots, also highest ratio in the competition.
  • Unicaja's Tim Abromaitis needs to score 14 points and to grab two rebounds to become just the third player scoring 600+ points and tallying 300+ rebounds in the history of the BCL; currently, only TaShawn Thomas (738 points, 317 rebounds) and Vojtech Hruban (968 points, 306 rebounds) have done it.

Game 2: Happy Casa Brindisi (0-3) vs. Darussafaka (1-1) - Group G

Where: Brindisi, Italy

First meeting this season: 3 November 2021, Darussafaka 82 Brindisi 76

 

  • Brindisi won their two encounters with Darüssafaka in the BCL in 2020-21 but lost their first meeting this year (76-82); Brindisi have lost their last three home games in the regular season after winning seven of their first nine.
  • After their win 82-76 against Happy Casa Brindisi in the last round, Darüssafaka will aim to win consecutive BCL games for the first time; they are yet to win an away game in the competition, however.
  • Brindisi (0.92) and Darüssafaka (0.93) have scored on average fewer points per possession than any other team this season in the BCL; they are also two of the three teams with the lowest 3P% this season (Darüssafaka 24.3%, Brindisi 25% - also Cluj Napoca 25%).
  • Darüssafaka have made 11 steals per game, the most of any team in the BCL in 2021-22; however, they have also made 18 turnovers, which is more than any other team in the league this season.
  • Nick Perkins has scored 18+ points in his last two BCL games with Happy Casa Brindisi but has never done it in three consecutive league games; in the reverse fixture, Perkins combined for his second double-double in the competition, with both coming against Turkish teams (Darüssafaka and Tofas Bursa).

Here's a look at the five games on Wednesday:

Game 1: Nizhny Novgorod (0-3) vs. Lavrio Megabolt (2-1) - Group C

Where: Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

First meeting this season: 2 November 2021, Lavrio 95 Nizhny 86

 

  • Nizhny have lost their last six games in the BCL, including in the last gameday against Lavrio (86-95), after winning eight of the previous nine; they have also lost their last three home games,
    as many defeats as in their previous 16 games on their own court.
  • Lavrio have currently won their two home games but lost their only previous away game in the BCL; the team leading at half-time always won in each of their three games.
  • Nizhny have scored the fewest field goals per game of any team in the BCL this season (24.3) but only EWE Baskets Oldenburg have made more free-throws per game (18.7) than the Russian side in the league this term (18.0)
  • Lavrio's bench unit has scored on average 14.7 points per game in the BCL this season, fewer than any other team and they are the only team yet to have a player scoring 10+ points in a game while coming from the bench this season.
  • Lavrio's Tyson Carter scored 35 points in the reverse fixture, the most by any player in a single BCL game this season; Carter has scored 15+ points in each of his three BCL appearances, while making 63% of his attempted 3-pointers (10/16), the highest of any player with 15+ attempts from behind the arc.

Game 2: Falco Szombathely (2-1) vs. Nutribullet Treviso (3-0) - Group D

  • Only one of Szombathely's last 12 games in the BCL has seen a final margin greater than 10 points; they have won four of their last five home games in the competition.
  • Treviso won their first three games in the BCL and could become the second team from Italy to win their first four games in the competition after Segafredo Virtus Bologna in 2018-19.
  • Treviso have scored 18.0 points per game in fast break situations, the most of any team in the BCL this season; Treviso are also the team to have conceded the fewest free-throws per game (8.3) and to have allowed the fewest attempts from the free-throw line per game (12.3) to their opponents in the league this season.
  • Zoltan Perl has scored 10+ points in each of his last 11 games with Falco Szombathely in the BCL; he is one of just two players combining for 40+ points and 15+ assists as a bench player (47PTS, 15AST) in the league this season, alongside Unicaja's Jaime Fernandez (40PTS, 16AST).
  • Tomas Dimsa has scored 16+ points in each of his last seven BCL games, while only four players have had a longer such sequence in league history: Kevin Punter, Ricky Ledo, Tyler Stone (8 games each) and Vojtech Hruban (9 games).

Game 3: U-BT Cluj Napoca (2-1) vs. Hapoel U-NET Holon (2-0) - Group G

Where: Cluj-Napoca, Romania

  • Cluj Napoca have lost only one of their three BCL games but that was in their previous meeting against Holon on gameday 3 (68-78); the team leading at half-time always won in each of Cluj's three games.
  • Holon have won their last five games in the BCL regular season after never winning more than three in a row at that stage of the competition; they have never won their first three games of a BCL season.
  • Holon have conceded 0.9 points per possession, the fewest of any team in the BCL in 2021-22; they have also conceded on average the fewest points in the paint (23.0), the fewest points from turnovers (8.5) and the fewest second chance points (5.5) per game in the league this season.
  • Elijah Stewart has scored exactly 18 points in two of his three BCL appearances with Cluj Napoca, including in the reverse fixture against Holon – that was the only league game in which Stewart came off the bench.
  • Steven Gray is scoring 46% of his attempted 3-pointers in the BCL this season (6/13) and is one of just two players to have scored in double-figures in both league games for Holon in 2021-22 (also Chris Johnson); Gray has scored 20+ points in four different BCL games, with three of those being played on the road.

Game 4: Rytas Vilnius (1-2) vs. Besiktas Icrypex (2-1) - Group H

  • Rytas have won their last two home games in the BCL after losing their first two such games; they have scored more than 80 points in each of their four home games in the competition.
  • Besiktas have won their last away game in the BCL (83-81 vs. Oldenburg) but have not won consecutive games away from home since November 2018 - February 2019 (four in a row).
  • Rytas have conceded 18.7 points per game in fast break situations, the most among all teams in the BCL in 2021-22; Besiktas have had an average of 77.9 possessions per game, more than any other team in the league this season.
  • Former Besiktas' Ivan Buva has combined for 10+ points and 8+ rebounds in each of his last two games with Rytas in the BCL but has never done it in three consecutive league appearances; with Buva on the floor, his team has outscored their opponents by a total of 15 points, a joint-high amongst all Rytas players this season (also Arnas Butkevicius).
  • Besiktas' Joshua Reaves (7 STL, 5 BLK) and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (5 STL, 5 BLK) are two of the only four players to have made 5+ steals and 5+ blocks in the BCL this season; Reaves had four blocks against Rytas in the last gameday, a joint-high for a player in a game this season.

Game 5: EWE Baskets Oldenburg (1-2) vs. Hereda San Pablo Burgos (2-1) - Group H

Where: Oldenburg, Germany

First meeting this season: 2 November 2021, Burgos 92 Oldenburg 80

 

  • Oldenburg have lost their last two games in the BCL, including against San Pablo Burgos (80-92), but they have never lost three games in a row in the competition; their last four games in the BCL have seen the team leading at half-time losing the game (W2 L2).
  • Burgos have lost their last three away games in the BCL, after winning five of the previous six; they have never lost four consecutive games away from home in the competition.
  • Burgos are one of the only four teams to have scored more points from their 3-pointers (114) than from their 2-pointers (100) in the BCL this season; EWE Baskets Oldenburg have scored 91 more points from 2-pointers (136) than from their 3-pointers (45), only Pinar Karsiyaka -that played one more game- has a greater difference (+104).
  • Max Heidegger has scored 17.3 points per game, the most of any EWE Baskets Oldenburg player in the BCL this season; however, Heidegger has scored just 20% of his attempted 3-pointers in the league this term (4/20).
  • Burgos' Alex Renfroe is the only player to have made 20+ assists while coming from the bench in the BCL this season (21); he is also the only player to have made 100+ assists overall since the beginning of last season (108).
