PAOK mateco guaranteeing highlight plays with seven-footer Marvin Jones

THESSALONIKI (Greece) - PAOK mateco are making their comeback to international scene after missing out in 2020-21. The former FIBA Saporta Cup and FIBA Korac Cup winners are looking to get back to glory days of the early 1990s, and the Basketball Champions League seems like a good platform to give it a go.

In a bizarre twist of fate, PAOK mateco fans are showing love to Aris. But not their arch rival club from Thessaloniki - Aris in question here is Aris Lykogiannis, the club's head coach who took over in 2020 after making a name for himself during his three stints with Kolossos Rodou from 2014 to 2020.

Here is what Lykogiannis has on his coaching board:

Jermaine Love, Malcolm Griffin, Josh Carter, Antonios Karagiannidis, Apostolos Roumoglou and Georgios Kamperidis have all been a part of the PAOK team in 2020-21.

The biggest of the new arrivals is the one of Marvin Jones. The 27-year-old center is a seven-footer who can fly, as he has shown us during his time with Olimpija Ljubljana and Peristeri in the Basketball Champions League.

Jones switched through three colleges in five years in the NCAA, and found a home for himself in Greece afterwards. PAOK will be his fourth different Greek club, he played for Peristeri, Promitheas, and Kolossos Rodou, where he worked with coach Aris in 2017-18.

Jones will have a powerful man next to him in the frontcourt in Derek Ogbeide. The Nigerian center is 6'9''/2.06m tall, still only 24 and coming off of a season in which he was selected as Cypriot League MVP, helping AEK Larnaca win the double crown.

He also played for Hapoel Eilat to finish the season, and signed with PAOK in June. Ogbeide played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2015 to 2019, before switching to Cyprus and enjoying a successful two-year-long stint with Larnaca.

The biggest domestic name of the summer was Vlado Jankovic. The 31-year-old forward knows coach Lykogiannis from their time spent together at Holargos in 2018-19, and he knows all about the Basketball Champions League having spent the last two seasons with AEK.

Lykogiannis is not the only Aris Jankovic worked with. He also played for Aris Thessaloniki in 2016-17. He was a part of one of the most dominant youth generations, winning both the FIBA U18 and FIBA U20 European Championships, and finishing second at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in 2009. He always played like he was the smartest man on the court, his experience will help PAOK make the transition back to international basketball smoothly.

Another former Kolossos Rodou, Aris and AEK man is Vassilis Toliopoulos. The 25-year-old covers both guard positions and his 11.6 points and 3.5 assists per game with Ionikos Nikaias last season made PAOK mateco call his number and book him on a two-season gig.

David DiLeo is coming to bring a bit of fresh air for PAOK. He is entering his second season as a pro, after playing for UCAM Murcia in Spain in 2020-21 before injuring his hand in January and ending the season on a low.

DiLeo can play both forward positions at 6'8''/2.03m, and expect him to shoot in the 40s in three-point percentage.

Two new Greek players are Nikos Kamarianos and Michalis Kamperidis. Kamarianos is a 24-year-old forward who started his professional career six years ago with AEK. He then played for Nea Kifissia, Panionios and Kolossos Rodou, but in 2020-21 for the latter, not getting a chance to work with coach Lykogiannis over there.

Kamperidis is 27, can help at the "four" and the "five," and for the first time in his professional career, he will be united with his brother Georgios Kamperidis. Michalis spent a season with Giannis Antetokounmpo at Filathlitikos in 2012-13, and then moved to AEK.

He also played for coach Lykogiannis in Holargos' run in 2018-19. He played for Rethymno Cretan Kings and Larisa over the course of next two seasons, and he enjoys a successful NBA 2k career.

Antreas Christodoulou is a Cypriot/Greek player who covers the "two" and "three." He started his career with Olympiacos, spent four years with Rethymno Cretan Kings, and then moved to Promitheas for the 2020-21 season.

Over there, he struggled to see regular minutes, now he is hoping that change of scenery could inspire him for greater things, both in Greece and in the Basketball Champions League. With Olympiacos, he claimed the FIBA Intercontinental Cup as an 18-year-old back in 2013.
