Goloman, Somogyi add more domestic firepower for Hungarian champions

SZOMBATHELY (Hungary) - Falco Szombathely are coming off of a historic season, having picked up their first ever domestic double crown in Hungary. For the third straight season, they are playing in the Basketball Champions League, and searching for the next step internationally.

There has been a change at the helm. Gasper Okorn is no longer the head coach, Milos Konakov has taken over after being the assistant coach from 2017 to 2021, getting his chance to create a new chapter with the three-time Hungarian champions.

Here is what Konakov has drawn up:

Zoltan Perl, Boris Barac, Szilard Benke, Benedek Varadi, Benedek Kovacs, Abel Sovegjarto and Akos Keller are all returning members of the 2020-21 team, while 17-year-olds Zsolt Takacs and Adam Horvath got promoted from the academy to the first team, and Peter Veraszto is coming back after a season with Atomeromu SE.

The new faces in the locker room are led by Marvin Clark. The 26-year-old power forward is 6'7''/2.01m tall, and is coming in from France, where he spent the last season with Champagne Basket, averaging 6.3 points in 18.0 minutes per game.

In 2020-21, Clark also played for Kangoeroes Mechelen, and he started his professional career with the Belgian team in 2019-20 too. He was a part of the Michigan State Spartans program, and also played for St John's Red Storm after redshirting in 2016-17. He is looking to hit ctrl+c and ctrl+v from his days in Belgium, when he averaged 13 points and 5 rebounds per game.

Another player with experience from the NCAA and Belgium is Gyorgy Goloman. The towering figure of 6'11''/2.11m is back to Hungary for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when he was still just 17.

Now a 25-year-old with four years of UCLA basketball behind him, followed by experiences from the NBA G League, Japan and Belgium is making his comeback. Goloman averaged 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game for Proximus Spirou in 2020-21.

The last summer addition to the mix was Adam Somogyi. The 21-year-old signed a contract with the two-time BCL champions Hereda San Pablo Burgos in the summer of 2021, but was sent back home on loan to earn more meaningful minutes in 2021-22.

Somogyi is a lefty point guard who spent his entire professional career between Hungary and Spain. He played the Spanish third division in 2018-19, and came back to Hungary to spend 2019-20 and 2020-21 with DEAC. He had 6.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 23 minutes per game in the Hungarian League last season.
