Tenerife end Nymburk streak, stay unbeaten - Gameday 4, Tuesday roundup

MIES (Switzerland) - Iberostar Tenerife put an end on Tuesday to ERA Nymburk's 37-game winning streak across all competitions with a big win at the Czech champions' home court.

The  Spanish team remain the only undefeated team in Group C, on a perfect 4-0 record, following a day that proved a very good day for visiting teams in that group.

There were plenty of  memorable results elsewhere too, so let's have a closer look at each of the nine games of the day:

ERA Nymburk 68-78 Iberostar Tenerife  – Group C


The Tenerife defense stifled the Czech champions as the Spanish team came up with 20 steals, to tie Monaco's record from 2017 for most steals in a BCL game, and claim a 78-68 win in a battle between the two previously unbeaten teams in Group C.

The visitors led for most of the contest albeit by slim margins and Nymburk reduced the deficit to 58-57 with 7:37 remaining to play.

Sasu Salin however drilled a three almost at the end of the 24-second clock and sparked a 15-1 run that Marcelinho Huertas capped with a jumper 2:58 from the final buzzer to stretch the Spanish lead to an unassailable 73-58.

Tenerife lost the battle on the glass 43 to 33, but they scored 22 points off Nymburk's 27 turnovers.

Newly-arrived Lahaou Konate paced the winners with 17 points and 8 rebounds while Huertas had a near double-double with 11 points and 9 assists. For Nymburk, Vojtech Hruban finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. 

Peristeri winmasters 71-74 Nizhny Novgorod – Group C


Nizhny jumped in the driver's seat immediately after tip-off and never abolished the lead but had to hold off Peristeri in the final minutes to celebrate a 74-71 road win.

The Russian side led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter but Scoochie Smith's scoring inspired a late charge by the hosts, who reduced the gap to 74-71 on a Steven Gray triple with 1:40 remaining in the final frame.

Both teams wasted two possessions each and after Darrlyn Willis missed a lay up with just 4 seconds on the clock, William Hatcher raced down the court and fired off a long three, but the ball bounced out.

Each team missed 8 valuable free-throws, but Nizhny shot the ball better from close range and scored 36 points in the paint, to Peristeri's 26.

Brandon Brown made crucial plays for Nizhny down the stretch and finished with 21 points, 3 assists and 3 boards, while Alec Brown chipped in with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Scoochie Smith finished with 21 points, 5 boards, 2 assists and 1 steal in a losing effort.

Nihzny have improved to 3-1 while Peristeri dropped to 2-2 .

VEF Riga 81-85 Gaziantep – Group C


Gaziantep claimed their first victory in a memorable way, as they trailed Riga for 34 minutes and by as many as 14 points but stormed back to topple the hosts 85-81.

Stevan Jelovac sunk two free-throws 17 seconds from time to put Gaziantep ahead 83-81 and Riga called a time-out. When play resumed however they turned the ball over and Jason Rich drew a foul.

In fitting fashion, as he was instrumental to the Turkish team winning the final quarter 26-13, he made both his shots from the line to seal Gaziantep's come from behind win.

Rich finished with a game-high 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting from the floor and added 4 assists, and Drew Crawford added 13 points and 4 rebounds. Young Latvian international Arturs Kurucs had a team-high 19 points in a losing effort.

Gaziantep now stand at 1-3 while Riga slide to 2-2.

Falco Szombathely 91-59 Telekom Baskets Bonn – Group D


The Hungarian champions led their German visitors from start to finish and cruised in style to their second victory in as many home games, 91-59.

Falco led by double digits in the opening quarter but Bonn appeared to be contemplating a comeback when they reduced the gap to 3 points, 36-33, late in the second period.

Juvonte Reddic's tip-in to beat the second buzzer however was a sign of things to come, as the hosts came back from the locker rooms and went on a 17-3 run which De'Quon Lake capped off with two free-throws 5 minutes from the end of the third stanza.

Reddic shot a perfect 7 of 7 from the field to lead Falco with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, while Marko Filipovity scored a game-high 18 points off the bench. For Bonn, Benjamin Simons finished with 13 points.

Both teams now stand at 2-2 in the Group D standings.

Polski Cukier Torun 95-113 Dinamo Sassari – Group A


Sassari poured in 60 second-half points and registered the second-best offensive display of the season to clinch a 113-95 victory over Torun in Poland.

Marco Spissu had 22 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds while Dwayne Evans came up with 29 points on a fantastic 13 of 17 from the field. The Italian team's fantastic duo erased a great performance by Torun's Chris Wright, who had a game-high 30 points and 6 assists.

The visitors had led by a slim margin for most of the night but only pulled away in the fourth quarter after a Stefano Gentile lay-up on the fast break sparked a 14-2 run and Sassari grabbed a 95-82 lead with 5:06 remaining to the final buzzer.

The Italian team dished out a collective 31 assists and shot 61 percent from the field, including 14 of 28 from behind the arc.

Sassari have improved to 3-1 on the table while Torun dropped to 1-3

Filou Oostende 80-66 Lietkabelis – Group A


Oostende overcame a slow start which saw them trail Lietkabelis by 10 points and pulled away late to secure an 80-66 win at home and leave the visitors without a win after four games.

The Belgian side made the most of their clear dominance close to the rim, as they scored 40 points in the paint, compared to 22 for Lietkabelis. The hosts shot a solid 57 percent from two-point range, while the visitors were ultimately let down by their poor 36 percent two-point shooting.

Braian Angola of Oostende shot 7 of 14 from the field and finished with a game-high 23 points while Shevon Thompson came up with yet another double-double, this time of 16 points and 10 boards. For Lietkabelis, Margiris Normantas, had 14 points in a losing effort.

Oostende have now improved to 2-2 in the standings while Lietkabelis remain bottom of the table at 0-4.

Brose Bamberg 81-76 Mornar Bar – Group C


Bamberg held on down the stretch to claim their second win in this edition of the BCL and hand Mornar Bar their fourth loss in as many games, 81-76.

Mornar Bar did well to climb back from an early 13-point deficit and grabbed a 47-46 lead midway through the third quarter, but Bamberg reacted swiftly, jumped back ahead and opened up a 67-58 lead four minutes into the final quarter.

The German team dominated the battle on the glass and brought down 46 rebounds, to Mornar Bar's 29. The hosts got enormous help from their bench players, who contributed 47 points, while the visitors' second unit only scored 13 points.

Assem Marei paced Bamberg with 17 points and 6 rebounds while Tre McLean had 15 points and 8 boards. Derek Needham and Jacob Pullen finished with with 19 points apiece in losing efforts.

San Pablo Burgos 78-82 Elan Bearnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez – Group B


Pau-Lacq-Orthez waited four weeks to finally tick the win column but did so with a bang as Nicolas De Jong delivered a monster performance for the French side to storm back from a 15-point deficit and topple Burgos 82-78 in Spain.

The French side scored only 29 points in the first half and appeared destined for a fourth defeat in as many games but came back from the locker rooms after the break with renewed determination and outscored the hosts 27-13 for the two teams to go into the final frame tied at 56-all.

De Jong drilled three consecutive jumpers, the last one a triple with 3:22 remaining to play, and put Pau-Lacq-Orthez ahead 73-68.

The visitors held on to the lead until the dying seconds and Ronald Moore. split two free-throws 4 seconds from the final buzzer to make it a two-possession game and seal the French win.

De Jong finished with 35 points on 13 of 17 shooting from the field and added 4 rebounds, while Tyrus McGee chipped in with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Earl Clark of Burgos had 17 points and 6 boards in a losing effort.

Burgos have dropped to 2-2, while Pau-Lacq-Orthez have improved to 1-3.

JDA Dijon 81-76 PAOK – Group D


David Holston drilled a triple from 8 meters out and with a hand in his face 20 seconds from the final buzzer for the still undefeated leaders of Group D, Dijon, to survive a big scare at home and deny PAOK 81-76.

The Greek team, chasing its first win in this season's BCL, refused to go away quietly when the hosts built a 10-point lead in the third quarter. PAOK fought their way back for Zisis Sarikopoulos to give them a 74-73 lead with a baby-hook going into the final minute.

Holston however swiftly restored Dijon in the lead as only knows how - with a deep three - and after Sarikopoulos replied with another close-range basket 27 seconds from time, Dijon's point guard came up with the dagger triple.

Dijon's game hero finished with 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting from downtown and 7 assists, while Axel Julien posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists. For PAOK, Sarikopoulos finished with 14 points and 6 boards.
