Five Things We Learned This Week - Gameday 1

MIES (Switzerland) - Did you know that Gameday 1 revealed the character of three Basketball Champions League newcomers, the thing that Tenerife has in common with China and that yellow is not AEK’s favorite color?

1. The Newcomers Who Love To Share

RASTA Vechta dished out 30 assists in their 89-76 win over Anwil on Tuesday, becoming the first team in Basketball Champions League history to reach that number in their debut game in the competition.

Vechta also became only the second German team in Basketball Champions League to reach 30 assists in a single game (EWE Baskets Oldenburg had 32 assists v Muratbey Usak in January 2017).


2. The Newcomers Who Love To Score

Peristeri winmasters’ bench unit scored as much points as their starting lineup (35) in the Greek side’s 70-64 Tuesday win against Gaziantep: no other team had as many points coming from their bench players as Peristeri in the opening week of the 2019-20 season.

Meanwhile fellow debutants San Pablo Burgos became after their Wednesday victory over Telenet Giants Antwerp the first Spanish team ever to score 90 points or more in a Gameday 1 clash.


3. The Great Wall of Tenerife

Iberostar Tenerife have conceded fewer than 70 points in 10 of their last 12 home games in the Basketball Champions League, following their 81-67 win over Nizhny on Tuesday.

The Spanish club, which is currently leading the competition’s all-time rankings, has now won 23 home games in league history, the most among all teams in the competition.

Tenerife head coach Txus Vidorreta meanwhile has three victories in as many opening games of a Basketball Champions League season, winning those three games by an average margin of 20.3 points.


4. AEK Sees Red Against the Tricolor

AEK’s 102-82 win over Pau-Lacq-Orthez marked the third occasion that the Athens team scored 100 points or more in their Basketball Champions League history, with two of those being against a French opponent (AEK had scored 100 against Monaco in the 2018 final).

The yellow-blacks made 60% of their field goal attempts against Pau-Lacq-Orthez, their best shooting display in a Basketball Champions League game and best field goal percentage of this Gameday 1.


5. Double-Double Speed

Neptunas Klaipeda’s Deividas Gailius is only the second player to collect at least 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in fewer than 29 minutes of action in a single game in Basketball Champions League history.

Polski Cukier Torun’s Chris Wright, who had 16 points and 11 assists in 29 minutes and 8 second on the floor during his team's 85-81 loss to BAXI Manresa, is only the fourth player to score 15+ points and dish 10+ assists in less than 30 minutes during a Basketball Champions League game.

Zack Hankins, who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds in ERA Nymburk's 91-71 win over Brose Bamberg, became the second player to register a double-double for the Czech championsk in their opening game of a Basketball Champions League season. The first was  (current AEK player) Howard Sant-Roos  in 2016, who actually posted the very first double-double in the history of the competition.
