First semester of the season is over: Report Cards are in

ZAGREB (Croatia) - The Regular Season is behind us, and it's now time to reflect on everything that happened. But in a school kind of way. Meaning, we're handing out the grades for all the teams playing.

There is one thing that needs to be pointed out before you start scrolling to find your team. If this really is a semester in school or university or wherever, you'd need to pass your exam to make it to the next level, semester, year or whatever. So, in order to get a good grade, you have to be in the Play-Offs. Which just means that if you're not there, you failed. That's a total of 16 grades F on their report cards.

Also, they are sorted alphabetically, making it two things that need to be pointed out before you start scrolling, (1) if your team failed to pass the exam called Regular Season, they got an F, and (2) AEK are first because they are named AEK, not because they are teacher's pet.

(Even though they are, don't tell anyone.)

Intro took too long again. Sorry. Let's go.

AEK

Regular Season record: 9-5
Grade
: B+

The 2018 champs could become the first team with two Basketball Champions League trophies, because they really are strong, and they adjusted to the fact that they lost Howard Sant-Roos by adding the know-how of Nikos Zisis. It's not an A just because potentially they aren't getting home court advantage in the Quarter-Finals, and home court advantage is something you really, Really, REALLY want if you are AEK. Those who have been there at the 2018 Final Four know what I'm talking about.

Anwil Wloclawek

Regular Season record: 5-9
Grade: F

It looked promising for a while, but five straight defeats in a loaded group like they had - that kept the Polish champs stuck in the Regular Season again. So, Stelmet Enea Zielona Gora are still the only Polish team to make it out of the group in the Basketball Champions League...

BAXI Manresa

Regular Season record: 7-7
Grade: F

This is a sad F, because Manresa deserved an A+ for their courage when they held Turk Telekom at bay for 30 minutes in Ankara, with only seven players available. They had everything in their hands to reach the Play-Offs, but four straight defeats kept them out of the hunt. Crazy. After week 10, they were in talks to win the group...and yet, they finished 5th. See you soon, BAXI.

Besiktas Sompo Sigorta

Regular Season record: 7-7
Grade: C+

Besiktas Sompo Sigorta is that student who is extremely smart, but not giving his 100 percent all the time. Instead, he waits for the deadline, then turns on the jets, does more in a couple of weeks than most teams do in a couple of years, and then he's back to resting again. Because BJK had their backs up against the wall, down at 3-6 with five games to play, and they made it out. Trouble is, their team is losing parts with every passing week, not sure which Besiktas we'll see in the Play-Offs - the 3-6 one or the 4-1 one.

Brose Bamberg

Regular Season record: 7-7
Grade: F

Rebuilding is a process. But Bamberg now get to focus on the German League, maybe that helps them out en route to the top of the country again, which would send them back to another season of Basketball Champions League.

Casademont Zaragoza

Regular Season record: 10-4
Grade: A

Casademont Zaragoza should run for class president because it seems like they are winning everything these days. Six wins in a row took them to the top of their group, and even players from JDA Dijon went on air to say that Zaragoza are on another level compared to everybody else. And, quite the opposite to Manresa, they weren't even close to top-of-the-group talks with eight weeks gone, when they were outside of Play-Off spots.

Dinamo Sassari

Regular Season record: 11-3
Grade: A-

Oh well. The only reason this is not an A or an A+ is because they finished second in their group. And, same as AEK, they thrive on home court advantage, increasing the heat down there on the island. This is just another 2-seed you want to avoid in the draw next week.

EB Pau-Lacq-Orthez

Regular Season record: 5-9
Grade: F

Other than the fact that Justin Dentmon won the scoring title, EB Pau-Lacq-Orthez aren't really going to remember this season for a long time. At least not the Basketball Champions League part of the season. But it was a pleasure to watch them play, maybe they channel their inner Dijon and come back as a Final Four contender next season.

ERA Nymburk

Regular Season record: 12-2
Grade: A+

OKAY. We handed out an A+ here! And the Czech champs completely deserved it, because of their league best record at 12-2, because of their win away at Tenerife, because of all the new faces they presented to the rest of Europe this season, because of their team unity which they just carried over from the Czech Republic national team (probably), because Vojtech Hruban said this was their season of redemption and because Vojtech Hruban was right.

Falco Szombathely

Regular Season record: 6-8
Grade: F

For a long time, Falco Szombathely reminded me of KK Split Croatia Insurance in the FIBA SuproLeague in 2001. Because that kind of felt like the times everybody was waiting for European games in Split, because the games home games were packed, because the team wasn't heavily favored to make it to the Play-Offs, and because of the yellow-and-black shirts, of course. But, Falco ran out of gas to close out the Regular Season, so the comparison to Split ends there.

Filou Oostende

Regular Season: 8-6
Grade: B+

This B+ is probably realistic. But really wanted to give them an A+ because Filou Oostende escaped the group stage for the first time ever, after falling short in each of the three previous season. And they've done it in impressive fashion, while giving serious minutes to teenagers like Amar Sylla and Keye van der Vuurst de Vries, and the biggest success of the season is the fact that I now know how to spell Keye van der Vuurst de Vries without having to double check!

Gaziantep

Regular Season record: 4-10
Grade: F

Oh well... At least Gaziantep had the buzzer beater of the season, when they knocked down a deep bomb to win it against Nizhny Novgorod.

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem

Regular Season record: 11-3
Grade: A

There's a reason why Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem have been at the top of the Power Rankings, or thereabout. They end the Regular Season with an offensive rating of 120.7, meaning they score nearly 121 points per 100 possessions, way above the league average, and way above anything we've seen in the history of this league. Yes, Jerusalem are currently playing the best offensive season EVER in the Basketball Champions League.

Happy Casa Brindisi

Regular Season record: 5-9
Grade: F

It's heartbreaking to see Happy Casa Brindisi finish at the bottom of Group D. It feels like every single game they played included a buzzer beater or a clutch finish, not all of them going Brindisi's way, but still, excitement was always there when these guys were on the floor. However, wins count, not excitement, they failed the class because they failed to advance.

Iberostar Tenerife

Regular Season record: 11-3
Grade: A-

Oh man. This A- is not an A+ only because they lost their last game, which sent them to second spot, which means they could have a tougher time in the Quarter-Finals, potentially. But how can you even say Tenerife are the ones having a tougher time in any pairing? How can you bet against Marcelinho Huertas, Giorgi Shermadini, Sasu Salin and all the others? I should've given them an A+++. Still feels like they could win the Basketball Champions League, the Spanish League, the Intertoto Cup, the Goodwill Games and the Nobel prize for winning, generally.

JDA Dijon

Regular Season record: 9-5
Grade: B

JDA Dijon looked like a straight A student for most of the season. They dropped to B because of the way they were dropped by Zaragoza, and because they lost two of their last three games in the Regular Season. B is good. It's better than good. It's called "very good" in grades.

Lietkabelis

Regular Season record: 7-7
Grade: B-

Still have no idea how they made it out of their group. If we had the "win probability" meter on screen during that last Gameday, it would've had Lietkabelis at 0.00001 percent chance of making it for most of the day, with Holon leading and Oostende trailing and Manresa fighting back. But, Oostende came from behind to win, Lietkabelis shocked Holon with a single point win, and a Manresa chaos in the finish saw them advance. Out of nowhere! Maybe that newfound confidence makes them a tougher draw in the Play-Offs.

Mornar Bar

Regular Season record: 4-10
Grade: F

Maybe losing their chances in the Basketball Champions League early turns out to be a win later on for Mornar. They have gone mad in the Adriatic League, charging towards a spot in the Semi-Finals. That's amazing. But still, they failed here, which makes us really sorry because Mornar are anecdotes just waiting to happen, wherever they appear.

Neptunas Klaipeda

Regular Season record: 6-8
Grade: F

It's been a tough one. Get well soon, Neptunas Klaipeda. We'd like you to go on a redemption tour next time around, do some of the stuff that Nymburk or Oostende have been doing this season.

Nizhny Novgorod

Regular Season record: 9-5
Grade: B

Well, they get a B since they are the only third seed with 9 wins. But they get a B since they are still just a third-seed and will not have home court advantage against Dijon, AEK or Sassari in the Round of 16. They will get an A if they come out with a win in one of those arenas.

PAOK

Regular Season record: 5-9
Grade: F

Up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down. PAOK are playing out one of the most exhausting seasons of their recent history. Just hope they don't get an F in Greek League too...

Peristeri winmasters

Regular Season record: 8-6
Grade: C+

It just feels like Peristeri could've been at 10-4 since four of their six defeats were by less than 10 points. Also, they are one of only two teams to defeat Nymburk this season, so they could've materialized it for more than just a fourth seed. It's like that student that keeps killing the ABC questions, but just messes it up when he has to explain the procedure.

Polski Cukier Torun

Regular Season record: 2-12
Grade: F

I'm going to miss updating the record books every time I have to write about a Polski Cukier Torun high-scoring game.

RASTA Vechta

Regular Season record: 6-8
Grade: F

These guys were a bit unlucky to stay in the group... But make sure to check them out when you're scrolling through German League highlights, because NOBODY punishes from the corners the way Vechta punish people from that spot.

San Pablo Burgos

Regular Season record: 8-6
Grade: C+

It's A+ for their Social Media team, that's for sure. But a C+ here because even though they made it through, this 8-6 thing could've been 10-4 or better with just a few nicer finishing touches. Bandirma -3, Pau -4, Anwil -10, Pau -4 again, Jerusalem -5. At least two of those defeats could've been avoided.

SIG Strasbourg

Regular Season record: 4-10
Grade: F

No words for this SIG season.

Teksut Bandirma

Regular Season record: 8-6
Grade: B

One of the two fourth seeds with 8 wins this season...but compared to Peristeri, Teksut Bandirma have done it while developing the next generation. We can only hope that Furkan Haltali and Alperen Sengun will stay together for a long, long time, because they could be the twin towers of Europe with all of their potential at the tender age of 17.

Telekom Baskets Bonn

Regular Season record: 8-6
Grade: C

Making a coaching change before the Play-Offs dropped their grade from B to C over here. Which means it could also go from C to A if it turns out to be the bravest and most successful move ever. It's going to be a lot of fun to see the new kind of beast from Bonn, because they have a lot of weapons over there, and a lot of players from other teams said that Yorman Polas Bartolo is the best defender of the entire league.

Telenet Giants Antwerp

Regular Season record: 4-10
Grade: F

Nobody expected them to make another trip to the Final Four when all of their core was gone over the summer. But there is still a lot to be excited about in Antwerp. A domestic double still could happen this season!

Turk Telekom

Regular Season record: 11-3
Grade: A

I'm still having a hard time figuring out who is the MVP of this squad. Moustapha Fall? Kyle Wiltjer? Muhammed Baygul? Nick Johnson? I'm just asking. But if they keep this up, the MVP of this squad could be the MVP of the Basketball Champions League season. It's possible.

UNET Holon

Regular Season record: 6-8
Grade: F

That last Gameday is still in the back of my head when I have to use the words "UNET" and "Holon" and "Basketball Champions League" together.

VEF Riga

Regular Season record: 1-13
Grade: F

Not sure what you expected when you scrolled all the way down here. It's an F, and VEF Riga join Petrol Olimpija Ljubljana and Bakken Bears as the only teams to finish with a 1-13 record since the start of this competition.
