Basketball Champions League Play-Offs Draw explained

MIES (Switzerland) - Following the conclusion of the Regular Season of the Basketball Champions League this Wednesday, 16 clubs (the first 4 clubs in each group) have qualified for the Play-Offs. The draw of this second phase of the competition will be conducted on Tuesday 18 February, 11:00 CET, at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball.

This event will be livestreamed on championsleague.basketball and draw the next two stages of the competition, constituting the Play-Offs: the Round of 16 and the Quarter-Finals. 

For the purposes of the Play-Offs Draw, the 16 qualified clubs have been ranked according to their final position within their respective Regular Season group and their place in the Draw will be based on this ranking. The teams having finished 1st of their Regular Season group are placed in Pot 1, the teams having finished 2nd of their Regular Season group are be placed in Pot 2, etc.



Draw for the Round of 16


The 16 teams will play best-of-3 series and the 8 winners will advance to the Quarter-Finals. The Round of 16 will tip off on 3 March 2020 and conclude (at the latest) on 18 March 2020. 

The teams having finished 1st (Pot 1) and 2nd (Pot 2) of their Regular Season group will be seeded and play the first and third legs of the the Round of 16 at home. The teams having finished 3rd (Pot 3) and 4th (Pot 4) of their Regular Season group will be unseeded and play the second leg of the the Round of 16 at home. 

The draw will start with Pot 1 vs Pot 4. A seeded club will be drawn first from Pot 1, then an unseeded club from Pot 4 will be drawn second. The pairing will form Game 1. The process will be followed until all 4 first games of the Round of 16 have been drawn.

The draw will continue with Pot 2 vs Pot 3. A seeded club will be drawn first from Pot 2, then an unseeded club from Pot 3 will be drawn second. The pairing will form Game 5. The process will be repeated until the 4 last games of the Round of 16 have been drawn. 

Draw restrictions
Clubs cannot be drawn against clubs from the same Group of the Regular Season. There is no country protection.

Draw for the Quarter-Finals


The 8 qualified teams will play best-of-3 series and the 4 winners will advance to the Final Four. The Quarter-Finals will start on 24 March 2020 and conclude (at the latest) on 8 April 2020. 

The pairings 1-4 (Pot 1 vs Pot 4) will be seeded and play the first and third legs of the Quarter-Finals at home. The pairings 5-8 (Pot 2 vs Pot 3) will be unseeded and play the second leg of the Quarter-Finals at home.

A seeded pairing (Pairs 1-4) will be drawn first, then an unseeded pairing (Pairs 5-8) will be drawn second. The pairing will then form Quarter-Final 1. The process will be repeated until all 4 games of the Quarter-Finals have been drawn. 

Draw restrictions
There is no draw restrictions for this draw.

The location of the Final Four (1-3 May 2020) will be announced after completion of the Quarter-Finals, early April. An additional draw will determine the Semi-Finals and will take place in the Final Four host city the week following the announcement.
