Umana Reyer Venezia scrape double-overtime triumph over UNET Holon

VENICE (Basketball Champions League) - Umana Reyer Venezia needed two overtimes but finally beat a brave and at times brilliant UNET Holon on Wednesday night, 111-104.

In one of the great games in the three-year history of the competition and played before a raucous crowd, many of them Holon supporters, Khalif Wyatt and the Israeli club were the hard-luck losers. Wyatt finished with a 35-point night, one in which he drilled 8 of 16 3-pointers and hit all 7 of his free-throw attempts.

But Umana Reyer, with players fouling out for both teams as the game wore on, had a little more quality at the end with Austin Daye especially able to carry the Italian club to victory.

Daye ended up playing more than 42 minutes and had 30 points and 11 rebounds. He was crucially 6 of 7 at the free-throw line.

Holon, who won last week at home to Fribourg Olympic, led by as many as 9 points in regulation and had an opportunity to win at the death but Darion Atkins missed with a jump hook in the lane.

UNET Holon came up just short in a double-overtime thriller

With just 4.8 seconds to go in the first overtime, Bruno Cerella missed two free-throws that would have put the hosts on top by four points. Instead, Amit Simhon rebounded the ball, passed to Corey Walden and he raced up the court and was fouled by Cerella as he tried to get into the lane to attempt a shot with just 0.2 seconds left.

Walden made both free-throws and then Umana Reyer, after advancing the ball following a timeout, had Julyan Stone throw the ball near the rim with his inbounds pass but no Venezia player went up to attempt to tap it in.

In the second overtime, Daye answered the call time and time again and the home side ended up outscoring Holon 17-10 for a seven-point triumph.

Mitchell Watt fouled out but not before scoring 24 points for Umana Reyer while MarQuez Haynes had 17 points and 7 assists.

For Holon, Atkins had 13 points and 16 rebounds while Guy Pnini contributed 14 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds. DeQuan Jones also made a big contribution for the visitors with 16 points and 5 rebounds.
