Neptunas shock Bologna - Gameday 8, Wednesday Round Up


MIES (Switzerland) - Gameday 8 came to a close on Wednesday night, with no bigger result than Neptunas knocking off the previously only undefeated team left in the Basketball Champions League, Bologna.

Here's a round up of that and all the other action:

Neptunas Klaipeda vs Segafredo Virtus Bologna

 
Segafredo Virtus Bologna's undefeated start came to an end at the hands of Neptunas Klaipeda with a 88-85 defeat.

Kevin Punter's potential overtime-forcing three fell short of the rim as Klaipeda escaped, with the win after being down as many as 12.

Tomas Delininkaitis played hero for Klaipeda with 28 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field and 8-of-10 at the line, and Jerai Grant had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Tony Taylor and Amath M'Baye led Bologna with 20 points each.

Notable Number: 52.3 - the percentage Klaipeda shot from beyond the arc, knocking down 11 triples.

Le Mans vs UCAM Murcia

 
UCAM Murcia finished with an 80-71 victory over LeMans on the road, improving to 7-1 on the season.

Ovie Soko knocked down what appeared to be the dagger triple to give Murcia a double digit lead with 2 minutes remaining, before securing a huge offensive rebound and converting on two free throws to ensure the Spanish side left France with a win.

Soko finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds, Marcos Delia had 14 points and Damjan Rudez joined them in double figures with 10 points.

Richard Hendrix's 20 points led Le Mans, as Wilfried Yeguete added 12 points.

Notable Number: 11 - the number of offensive rebounds Murcia pulled in, as they converted 13 second chance points.

Anwil vs Ventspils

 
Anwil led from start to finish for a comfortable 84-71 win over Ventspils, improving to 4-4 in Group A.

The home side led with their defence in the victory, harassing Ventspils into 18 turnovers and turning them into points at the other end 

Aaron Broussard had 12 points and 6 assists to lead a balanced team effort, as six other players reached at least 9 points for Anwil.

Ventspils were led by 21 points from Ingus Jakovics, and Aaron Johnson's 14 points and 11 assists, but it would not stop them from dropping to 3-5.

Notable Number: 27 - the number of points Anwil converted off of turnovers.

PAOK vs Umana Reyer Venezia

 
PAOK got a 77-76 win over Umana Reyer Venezia, on the go-ahead free throws of Phil Goss as the Greek side held off a late rally from the visitors.

It marks their fifth consecutive win in the Basketball Champions League, improving to 5-3, whilst Venezia fell to the same record. The visitors knocked down big shots down the stretch to keep pulling within striking distance, but PAOK had an answer on every occasion, and Phil Goss converted at the free throw line when it mattered.

Goss finished with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Linos Chrysikopoulos and Yanick Moreira had 14 each.

Deron Washington had 15 and was strong in the second half for Venezia, whilst MarQuez Haynes added 15 of his own.

Notable Number: 24 - Phil Goss registered the game-high in efficiency, as he came to play against his former team.

MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg vs Banvit

  
Banvit took care of business on the road with a 88-76 win over MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.

Trailing by 4 with 7:06 remaining, Banvit used a 15-0 run sparked by Alex Perez to grab a stranglehold on the game and wouldn't let up down the stretch.

Perez scored 18 points, along with 6 rebounds and 9 assists for Banvit, whilst Ismail Cem Ulusoy was instrumental with 15 points and 5 assists, as they improved to 5-3.

Lamont Da'Sean Jones had 22 points to lead the home team, with Kelan Martin adding a 14 point, 10 rebound double-double, but Ludwigsburg drop to 2-6.

Notable Number: +31 - Banvit's production with Ulusoy on the floor, as the 22 year old proved to be the difference maker.

Sidigas Avellino vs Nizhny Novgorod

 
Nizhny Novgorod got a comfortable 92-71 road victory over Sidigas Avellino.

The Russian side dominated the second half, pouring in 30 points in the third period, as they were  led by Ivan Strebkov, who went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc on his way to 29 points.

Ilya Popov and Kendrick Perry had 13 each, and Vladimir Dragicevic joined them in double digits with 11.

Demetris Nichols had 25 and 11 rebounds for Avellino, Caleb Green had 17 and Norris Cole finished with 11 before fouling out.

Notable Number: 19 - Nizhny were dominant on the offensive glass, hauling in 19 rebounds.

Fribourg Olympic vs UNET Holon

 
UNET Holon held on for a 95-90 win over Fribourg Olympic in Switzerland, moving into second place in Group C.

The visitors held off Fribourg, who got the deficit down to 1 on multiple occasions down the stretch, 

Corey Walden had 24 points on the night, Guy Pnini knocked down five triples for 17 points, and T.J. Cline added 15 for Holon.

Dusan Mladjan scored 16 of his 25 points before the break, Andre Williamson had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Babacar Toure had 18 points and 13 rebounds, as Fribourg grabbed 17 offensive rebounds but will still drop to 1-7. 

Notable Number: 57.1 - UNET Holon were still able to win, despite a woeful free throw percentage, as they went 12-of-21 at the line.

Nanterre 92 vs Opava

 
Nanterre wanted to prove their shock Gameday 1 defeat at the hands of Opava was a fluke, and they sent a statement with a 110-64 rout of the visitors.

Opava only managed to avoid the largest defeat in the history of the Basketball Champions League (+47) in the final minute, erasing what was a 52-point margin at one point. Nanterre cruised all the way, leading from start to finish.

Dominic Waters led the scoring with 19 points, Lahaou Konate finished with 15, and Hugo Invernizzi added 13 to go with 8 assists for Nanterre, who improved to 4-4.

Opava were led by 15 points and 8 rebounds from Miroslav Kvapil, and 14 from Vaclav Bujnoch but they dropped to 1-7 in the defeat

Notable Number: 31 - the number of assists Nanterre registered as they distributed the ball on their way to a triple-digit scoring game.

Montakit Fuenlabrada vs Brose Bamberg

 
Tyrese Rice proved instrumental as Bamberg got a 75-65 win over Montakit Fuenlabrada, avenging the loss at the buzzer in their first match-up.

Rice went 5-for-5 in the final period for 11 of his game-high 26 points, converting on a dagger three in the final minute to give Bamberg an 8-point cushion.

Patrick Heckmann and Augustine Rubit scored 11 apiece for Bamberg, who are now 5-3 in Group C.

Francisco Cruz - who hit the game-winner last time - had 13 points to lead Fuenlabrada, and Christian Eyenga had 11 but it would not be enough to prevent the Spanish side from losing their fifth straight game in the Basketball Champions League.

Notable Number: 22 - the number of lead changes, as once again, the two sides could not be separated.
