High-energy Montakit Fuenlabrada slay Telenet Giants Antwerp

FUENLABRADA (Basketball Champions League) - Montakit Fuenlabrada claimed their second straight win in the Basketball Champions League by cruising past Telenet Giants Antwerp on Tuesday night, 96-84.

After last week's buzzer-beating win at Brose Bamberg, courtesy of Pako Cruz's long 3-pointer, Fuenlabrada crashed to a 110-60 home defeat to Baskonia on Sunday so they needed a victory in a big way.

The weekend loss, Fuenlabrada's third in four domestic league games, led to the departure of coach Agusti Julbe. He parted ways with the club and gave way to assistant Jose Maria Raventos.

Fuenlabrada hit the court on Tuesday breathing fire against Antwerp. Playing with a sense of urgency and sparked early by Marko Popovic, who scored his first 12 points on 3-balls, the hosts raced into a 28-18 advantage by the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

The Spanish outfit was faster to loose balls and played like hungry tigers on defense, never allowing the Giants to feel comfortable in the half-court.

Popovic had 17 points while Talib Zanna and Christian Eyenga combined for 22 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Fuenlabrada displayed far more energy, particularly with the play of Luka Rupnik, Alex Llorca, Tomas Bellas and Marc Garcia.

Garcia and Cruz each had 14 points in the win.

For Antwerp, Belgium internationals Hans Vanwijn and Ismael Bako struggled at the quicker pace and made little impact on the contest. Dave Dudzinski had another strong game with 19 points and Victor Sanders also drilled 4 of 5 shots from deep on his way to 13 points. Jae'Sean Tate also had moments where he played well yet had his struggles, too, for Antwerp.

Fuenlabrada hit the road and face JDA Dijon in France next week while Antwerp will host Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem.
