Gameday 3, Tuesday Round Up


MIES (Basketball Champions League) - It was another wild night in the Basketball Champions League on Tuesday, culminating in an overtime thriller in Italy for Gameday 3.

Nizhny Novgorod vs UCAM Murcia

UCAM Murcia took advantage of an injury to Kendrick Perry to come away with a 72-51 win over Nizhny Novgorod in the opening game of the night.



Perry got injured in the first half and ultimately was limited to just nine minutes, as Murcia took control in the third period and cruised in the fourth to remain undefeated.

Milton Doyle led the Spaniards with 18 points, Ovie Soko had 14 and Kevin Tumba had 11 points and 10 rebounds, including a couple of rim-shaking dunks.

No player reached double figures for Nizhny, as Ivan Strebkov led with 8 points and 8 assists.

Notable Number: 21 - the number of offensive rebounds Murcia finished with, as they dominated the glass.

 

Opava vs Umana Reyer Venezia

Umana Reyer Venezia started the season 3-0 atop of Group B with a 90-72 victory over Opava on the road.



It means the Italian side are a combined 6-0 on the season, having started 3-0 in LegaBasket with no signs of slowing down.

Venezia pulled away at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, with Opava not being able to get within single digits the rest of the way.

MarQuez Haynes went 5-of-10 from downtown for 20 points in just 24 minutes, and Austin Daye added an efficient 16 points. 

Martin Gniadek had 17 points in defeat for the hosts, as they fell to 1-2.

Notable Number: 14 - the rebounding differential, as Venezia won the glass 46-32.



UNET Holon vs PAOK

Two careless turnovers in the final minute saw PAOK fall 72-68 at the hands of UNET Holon.



The game was nip and tuck throughout, featuring 15 lead changes, and could have gone either way until PAOK's failure to execute down the stretch, as they dropped to 0-3 to start the season.

Khalif Wyatt had a team-high 14 points for the victors who climbed to 2-1, whilst Victor Cline was instrumental with his 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Phil Goss led PAOK with 23 points.

Notable Number: 31 - the number of free throws Holon converted, going 31-for 36 overall. 


Telekom Baskets Bonn vs Nanterre 92

Nanterre silenced the crowd in the Telekom Dome with a 81-57 turnaround win over Telekom Baskets Bonn.



A Demetrius Treadwell lay up at the end of the third quarter gave Nanterre their first lead of the game 49-48, and then they dominated the fourth period 28-7 to cruise to a comfortable victory.

Jeremy Senglin and Dominic Waters led Nanterre with 20 points-a-piece, whilst Julian Gamble played a crucial role finishing with 6 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block. Haukur Palsson came alive in the second half on his way to 13 points.

Bonn Head Coach Predrag Krunic commented:

"Congratulations to Nanterre, who played with more energy in the second half than we did. We missed out on extending the lead before intermission and lost our rhythm going forward.

"When you can’t hit from the outside, you have to bring the ball closer to the basket – which we didn’t do.“

Anthony DiLeo, Charles Jackson and Joshua Mayo led Bonn with 11 points each.

Notable Number: 21 - the number of points Nanterre outscored Bonn by in the fourth quarter, making it a comfortable win.


Sidigas Avellino vs Anwil

Sidigas Avellino needed overtime to dispatch of Anwil, 105-102, using a spectacular performance from Norris Cole.



Cole finished with 33 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists, as he knocked down 7 three pointers, breaking the hearts of Anwil who refused to go down without a fight.

Perfect execution on an out of bounds play at the end of regulation saw overtime be forced by the visitors, but Demetris Nichols knocked down the triple to break the tie with 2 minutes left from which point Avellino held on.

Matt Costello had an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double - missing just two shots,  and Caleb Green had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Chase Simon had 23 points to lead six players in double digits for Anwil, including Kamil Laczynski, who had a 10-point, 12-assist double-double.

Notable Number: 26 - the number of assists Avellino finished with, as they took inspiration from Tenerife (see below).

 

Iberostar Tenerife vs Fribourg Olympic

Iberostar Tenerife put on another passing masterclass as they had little trouble dispatching of Fribourg Olympic, 91-68.



Tenerife registered 33 assists on 35 baskets, led by Ferran Bassas' 10, and shot over 55% overall.

Tim Abromaitis missed just two shots on his way to 23 points, Nicolas Brussino had 16, and Mamadou Niang went 6-for-6 for his 12 points, predominantly on alley oop dunks.

Andre Williamson had 17 points and 8 rebounds to lead Fribourg.

Notable Number: 33 - the number of assists Tenerife registered, it's worth reiterating just how impressive their passing has been this season.
