Gameday 1 Wednesday Round Up

MIES (Basketball Champions League) - A thrilling Gameday 1 came to a close on Wednesday, with a whole host of excitement and down-to-the-wire games that have left the fans already anticipating next week.

Below is a round up of all the action; you can also find the reports for Banvit's come-from-behind win over MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg here, and Segafredo Virtus Bologna's overtime win over Neptunas Klaipeda here.

Ventspils vs Anwil

Anwil put on a clinic on their way to a 99-78 comprehensive road win of Ventspils in Latvia.

The visitors dictated the tone of the game from early, pouring in 32 points in the first quarter, as they shot just short of 70% in the field in the opening period in a sign of things to come.

If it wasn't for Jonathan Arledge - who single-handedly kept his team in the game at points, finishing with 21 - Ventspils could have found themselves in an even bigger hole.

Anwil led by as many as 28 and never relinquished the lead to pull out a comfortable victory.

Michal Michalak had 22 points in 26 minutes off the bench to lead the Polish champions, with Jaroslaw Zyskowski adding 17 as five players reached double figures.

Notable Number: 26 - the number of assists Anwil registered on the game, as they distributed the ball beautifully on their way to victory.

Opava vs Nanterre 92

Opava made their Basketball Champions League debut a successful one with a 74-67 win over Nanterre 92 in Group B.

The home side led from start to finish, but it was anything but easy as the French side made multiple runs, pulling to within one with a little over five minutes remaining but every time, Opava had an answer.

Ultimately, Nanterre's sloppy start cost them, being outscored 28-16 in the opening period.

Jakub Sirina had 15 points and 6 assists to lead the victors, with Radim Klecka adding 12. Julian Gamble went 6-for-9 to lead Nanterre with 14 points.

Notable Number: 10 - the number of players that Opava had play at least 13 minutes, showing the depth they have to play with.

AEK vs Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem

AEK went down 79-75 at home at the hands of Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem in the first game of their title defence on Wednesday evening.

With AEK leading 42-31 at halftime, the visitors went on a 20-3 run sparked by J`Covan Brown to open the second half and regain the lead as they dominated the third period, pouring in 27 points.

A 7-0 run to open the fourth took Jerusalem's lead to double-digits and seemingly sealing the game, however, a last gasp comeback from AEK - down 11 with 2 minutes left - managing to pull within 3 in the final seconds but it was too little too late.

J'Covan Brown had 21 points and 8 assists to lead Jerusalem's effort, with Chris Johnson and Josh Owens adding 10-a-piece, the latter finishing with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Rathan-Mayes led AEK with 17 points, Vince Hunter had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Dusan Sakota finished with 13.

Notable Number: -15 - Ama're Stoudemire's return was perhaps not as successful as he would have hoped, with the worst +/- rating on his team.

UNET Holon vs Fribourg Olympic

UNET Holon pulled away in the third and left little doubt in the fourth with a 93-69 win over Fribourg Olympic, who were grounded after a magical start through the Basketball Champions League Qualification Rounds.

With 10 lead changes in the first half, the game was already closer than many expected but a 29-12 third quarter from the Israelis soon turned the tide.

Khalif Wyatt finished with a double-double of 21 points and 11 assists, and DeQuan Jones added 17 in the victory.

Fribourg were led by 16-a-piece from Andre Williamson and Dusan Mladjan.

Notable Number: 17 - the number of three-pointers UNET Holon knocked down, as they shot 50% from beyond the arc.

Brose Bamberg vs Montakit Fuenlabrada

Francisco Cruz knocked down a fall-away three from way beyond the arc as time expired to give Montakit Fuenlabrada an incredible 89-88 win over Brose Bamberg.

Trailing by 8 with 1:38 remaining, things looked bleak for the visitors but they were seemingly blessed by the basketball gods over the next 90 seconds, coming up with crunch time baskets, including a Christian Eyenga three that bounced high off the rim before dropping through, to pull out what seemed like the most improbable win.

Cruz finished with 22 points, 15 of which came in the first half, along with 6 assists to lead Fuenlabrada, and Talib Zanna had 19 points.

The Spaniards overcame an efficient 33 point, 8 assist outing from Bamberg's Tyrese Rice, who dominated from start to finish,  whilst Augustine Rubit added 16.

Notable Number: 5 - is the number of shots that Tyrese Rice missed on his way to 33 points, no doubt one of the most efficient 30 point games we will see this season.

UCAM Murcia CB vs Le Mans

UCAM Murcia CB tightened up defensively to defeat French champions Le Mans with a 74-62 win in Spain.

As both teams combined for an abysmal 7-for-40 shooting from three, Murcia dominated the paint, scoring 46 points inside. After Le Mans had tied  the game at 42 midway through the third, an 11-0 run to finish the quarter was enough for Murcia to take a commanding lead and roll to victory.

Milton Doyle had 14 points to lead Murcia, and Ovie Soko and Emanuel Cate had 10 points each.

Le Mans saw 16 points from Cameron Clark, but he was the only player to reach double figures.

Notable Number: 66.7 - the percentage Murcia shot from inside the arc, enough to compensate for their 4-for-21 from outside.

Filou Oostende vs Promitheas Patras

Promitheas Patras pulled out a 93-84 road win over Filou Oostende to complete the action of Gameday 1 of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season.

Promitheas' 50 points from the bench proved to be the difference maker, as they managed to hold off Oostende who refused to go down without a fight.

Rion Brown had 21 points on 6-for-9 shooting to lead Promitheas, as Tony Meier added 14 and Nikos Gkikas 13 along with 7 assists.

Oostende received 20 from Nemanja Djurisic and 14 from Yannick Desiron.

Notable number: 55 - the percentage that both teams shot above, in a game with remarkable combined accuracy.
