Bamberg book Round of 16 spot - Gameday 12, Wednesday Round Up

MIES (Switzerland) - The Wednesday edition of Gameday 12 brought two of the games of the season so far, as Brose Bamberg confirmed their place in the Round of 16, and Besiktas Sompo Japan escaped Segafredo Virtus Bologna in a thriller.

Here's a round up of all the action:

Neptunas Klaipeda vs Petrol Olimpija

 
Neptunas Klaipeda got a vital 82-74 win over Petrol Olimpija to heat up the Play-Offs battle in Group D.

The Lithuanian side are now .500 with two games remaining, having the potential to set up a three-way tie.

After Olimpija had pulled to within 4 and two minutes remaining, Osvaldas Olisevicius hit a huge triple from the corner to take it back to a seven point cushion, enough to hold off Olimpija the rest of the way.

Kyle Weaver had a strong start to finish with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, Jerai Grant scored 13, and Olisevicius finished with 12.

Olimpija got 13 out of Marvin Jones and a near double-double from Luka Samanic as he finished with 10 points and 9 boards, but dropped to 1-11.

Notable Number: 19 - the number of turnovers Olimpija finished with, as Neptunas were able to convert that into 20 points.

PAOK vs Opava

 
PAOK handed Opava the largest defeat in the history of the Basketball Champions League, with a 93-43 win, improving to 7-5 on the season.

PAOK jumped out to a double digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back, as they held Opava to the lowest points total for a team in Basketball Champions League history.

Five players reached double digits for PAOK, including Milenko Tepic, who had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, whilst Stavros Schizas led the scoring with 16 points and Linos Chrysikopoulos had 13 points.

Opava were led by Radim Klecka as the only player in double figures with 11 points.

Notable Number: 6 - Opava's point total in the fourth quarter as they were totally shut down by PAOK.

Fribourg Olympic vs Nanterre 92

 
Nanterre 92 used a team effort to register a fitting 92-81 victory over Fribourg Olympic.

Six players reached double figures for the French side, led by Hugo Invernizzi who went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc on his way to a team-high 19 points.

Dominic Waters added 18 points and 8 assists, whilst Demetrius Treadwell and Adas Juskevicius finished with 11 each.

Eighteen points from Justin Roberson and 17 from Dusan Mladjan would not be enough for Fribourg, who dropped to 3-9.

Notable Number: 57.1 - the percentage Nanterre shot from beyond the arc, going 16-of-28.

UNET Holon vs Iberostar Tenerife

 
Iberostar Tenerife clinched the top spot in Group B, coming from 13 down for a 88-77 win over UNET Holon.

Tenerife dominated the fourth quarter to complete the fightback, pouring in 31 points to overturn a deficit, led by Nicolas Brussino who had 16 of his 20 in the final period.

Tim Abromaitis added 16 points and 7 rebounds for the visitors, whilst Ferran Bassas had 9.

UNET Holon were led by 19 points from DeQuan Jones, whilst Darion Atkins added 14, but Holon  are now in a three-way tie with PAOK and Nanterre.

Notable Number: 25 - the number of second chance points Tenerife scored, as they finished with 15 offensive rebounds.

Brose Bamberg vs Telenet Giants Antwerp

 
Tyrese Rice had another impressive outing to lead Brose Bamberg to an 82-78 victory over Telenet Giants Antwerp.

Rice had 11 of his 24 points in the final quarter, coming up with some big plays down the stretch to confirm Brose's place in the Round of 16.

He added 5 rebounds and 6 assists, whilst Cliff Alexander had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Augustine Rubit and Nikos Zisis provided experience when it was needed to erase a double digit deficit, both finishing with 10 for Bamberg.

Ismael Bako and Hans Vanwijn had 15 each to lead Antwerp, but it remains to be see if they lock up their spot in the Play-Offs.

Notable Number:  9 - the number of points Rice had in the final 5:11 of the game, as he once again showed he is one of more clutch players in the Basketball Champions League this season.

Montakit Fuenlabrada vs AEK

 
AEK registered a 90-82 win over Montakit Fuenlabrada to remain top of Group C in a solid performance on the road.

AEK led from start to finish, and stretched their advantage to as many as 28, as Fuenlabrada were never allowed into the game.

Vince Hunter continued his strong case for MVP, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks on 9-of-12 shootings for the defending champions, who are now 10-2.

Jordan Theodore finished with 19 points, whilst Dusan Sakota added 11 for the Greeks.

Fuenlabrada were led by 13 apiece from Christian Eyenga and Maurice Kemp, but they fell to their ninth straight defeat.

Notable Number: 20 - the number of offensive rebounds Fuenlabrada hauled in, as they dominated on the glass but it would not be enough.

JDA Dijon vs Lietkabelis

 
David Holston caught fire to lead JDA Dijon to a 99-91 win over Lietkabelis, knocking them out of a chance to make the Round of 16.

Holston knocked down seven three-pointers, finishing with a 31-point outing, as the French side used a 7-0 late in the fourth quarter - with 4 of those from Holston - to take control for good.

Ryan Pearson added 18 points for Dijon, and Axel Julien had 16 points, 5 rebound and 9 assists, as they improved to 4-8 in sixth place in Group C.

Paulius Valinskas went 6-of-6 for 20 points to lead Lietkabelis, and  Simas Jasaitis had 17, but it wasn't enough, as they also stand at 4-8.

Notable Number: 33 - the number of points Dijon registered off turnovers, as they finished with 14 steals.

Segafredo Virtus Bologna vs Besiktas Sompo Japan

 
Kevin Punter's wide open three at the buzzer fell short, and Besiktas Sompo Japan escaped Segrafredo Virtus Bologna with a 71-70 win.

In what was one of the games of the season so far, Bologna's comeback fell short, after trailing by 22 at the halftime following  woeful second quarter, the Italian side dominated the second half but were unable to complete the comeback.

Jason Rich scored 18 points to lead Besiktas, who have now four straight and six of their last seven Basketball Champions League games, Phil Pressey had 13, and Robin Benzing and Kyle Gibson added 12 each.

Kevin Punter had 17 for Bologna, but will be kicking himself for missing the potential winner, Tony Taylor had 16 and 6 assists, and Brian Qvale added 13, as they now stand 9-3, remaining at the top of Group D.

Notable Number: 22 - the amount Bologna trailed by before their improbable comeback which ultimately fell short.
