Tenerife tighten screws in second half to defeat Gaziantep

GAZIANTEP (Basketball Champions League) - Iberostar Tenerife erased Gaziantep's unbeaten record with a 87-74 come from behind win on Wednesday evening in Group B.

Trailing by six at halftime, the visitors tightened the screw across the third and fourth quarters, holding Gaziantep to just nine points in the final period to pull out the victory and improve to 2-1.


Tim Abromaitis' 18 points, 14 of which came in the first half, led six players into double digits for Tenerife, with Mateusz Ponitka and Mike Tobey adding 14-a-piece, meanwhile Rodrigo San Miguel registered 7 assists.

For Gaziantep, Mark Lyons' 14 was the top scoring performance, as the home side also saw balanced scoring with 5 players reaching double digits.

A DJ White elbow jumper gave Gazantiep their biggest lead of the game, 44-36 with 1:30 to play in the half forcing Tenerife into a time out.

Gaziantep were clinical to lead 46-40 at halftime, having shot 59% from two and 46% from three.

Lyons, despite battling foul trouble had 12 points the half to lead the Turkish side, whilst Tim Abromaitis had poured in 14 for Tenerife. 

Tenerife opened the second half sparked by Mateusz Ponitka, who had 6 points in the period, including a big dunk on the baseline as the visitors had tied the game at 52 midway through the quarter.

From there, big man Tobey took the reigns, adding 8 of his own in the quarter as Tenerife kept pouring it on.

A Davin White three gave Tenerife their first double digit lead of game, 79-69 with 6 minutes remaining and put Tenerife in the driving seat.

Finally, a Javier Beiran dagger three with a minute left sealed the outcome and drowned out any hopes of a Gaziantep comeback.
